Oh FFS. I just opened up twitter (as NSC) and this was the tweet at the top of my timeline feed thing...

About the RTed tweet it said:

Age-restricted adult content. This content might not be appropriate for everyone. To view this media, you’ll need to add your birthdate to your profile. Twitter also uses your age to show more relevant content, including ads, as explained in our Privacy Policy
So I went to add a birthdate and the NSC account was immediately locked. I need to send proof of ID and the account may be unlocked at some point in the future. Brilliant timing when the twitter workforce has been slashed and I'm guessing those who remain won't be too bothered about such trivialities as this.

Decided to close Twitter and move to Mastadon for the few bits I follow. Needs some Albion related stuff and it needs to speed up but the little look I had seems nice enough. Took a few days for my account to be allowed so they are obviously gaining in numbers. Will never be the same but if it cuts out the goons, racists and bots, it will be nice and relaxing.

Quite a few users today seem to think Twitter will go bang within days.
Seemingly down to about 20% of staff left after his Twitter 2.0 ‘ultimatum’ email on Wednesday. Doubt to much will happen but they’ll not be rolling out any software updates, patches, new development etc

Musk is a moron, pretty sure it’s deliberate because he was ‘forced’ to buy Twitter in the end

Getting so much 'Promoted' crap on Twitter, that I now just block it all. I created a Mastodom account 2 weeks ago, its a bit quiet on there at present.

Twitter is arguably one of the most egalitarian forms of communication and ideas sharing ever created, and has provided a voice to millions of oppressed people exposing corruption and war crimes in various parts of the world.

When you look at the people who back Musk (Putin, the Saudis, China etc.) it's hardly a surprise he seems to be trying to shut it down. It'd be hugely convenient for those despots if it ceased to exist.

I was thinking of setting one up this weekend, is it any good? I keep hearing mixed things and most of the positive stuff seems to be "it's not Twitter".

It would be good if a lot of sources of information move over to it.

I went through all my twitter follows and would like about 15 of them to be on Mastodon. Sadly just 3 are.

For now it is very "sparse".

thats pretty unlikely. its a simple app, with some very clever algorithm in the back, it could and should run with minimal intervention.

It still needs people to fix issues if (when) it goes wrong though, and if all your engineers have walked out you're screwed. They would be far from the first major company to suffer a serious outage for this reason.

Overpaying for a social media platform before running it into the ground in a month or so does not scream genius to me.

If there are not a whole load of former Twitter employees currently creating a new service which is being funded by the former execs of Twitter I’d be amazed.

Struggling with Mastodon though, can’t seem to sign up properly which I’m guessing is due to the amount of people trying to do the same.

Saw a rather good theory for where Musk is going wrong. It uses something called the Clocks and Clouds theory (originates from Karl Popper). Boiling it down, there's two types of "problems" in the world: Clock problems, and Cloud problems. Clock problems are ones where you know when you've solved the problem, you can easily measure the success of the solution, and you can take the solution apart and put it back together again and repeat the solution easily. Just like a clock: the problem is you need to know what the time is. The clock solves the problem, and once built continues to solve the problem - and you can pull it apart, see how it works, put it back together again. Cloud problems are entirely different. You can't just pull apart a cloud and see how it works and put it back together again. Clouds are a whole lot harder to measure, harder to model, and don't permanently solve a problem. Cloud problems will often need to have their solutions revised, and the right solution might differ depending on who is using the solution or when they are using it.

Musk's problem is he's coming from a Clock thinking background. Building cars and rockets are mostly clock problems. Twitter, however, is a Cloud problem. He's dealing with social stuff that can't be solved through Clock thinking. But it's clear from a lot of his posts on Twitter that he's applying the same Clock thinking he applied to cars and rockets to Twitter.
