apologies if fixtures but excellent news that fascist bolsonaro has been voted out, despite widespread voter suppression in the leftist strongholds. though his reaction to this defeat will be very interesting.
He's going to fight it claiming it's a "rigged election", isn't he? Pretty sure he said ages ago that he would, if the vote didn't go his way...

If there was a (preferably televised) Russian roulette game between all the nasty politicians, I'd hope for him to get bullet.

He is immensly powerful unfortunately and I don't think any election will stop that. He can easily create or find something dirty on Lula to create dissent, or get the Brazilian oligarchy to strangle the economy and create chaos etc. until he comes to "save the day".

Don't think they're out of the chaos but hopefully.

yeah, he's still a political grandee and won't be going anywhere. think we saw from Lula's trumped up corruption charges that there will be continuous attempts at interference. but I do think it's a pretty big deal that he's become the first incumbent to lose after one term. his brand of populism will come again, but at least we know how fallible it is now

Very happy. The Bolsonaro supporters have been in our faces, loud and intimidating for months.
I can't believe why anyone should vote for him, even intelligent members of my wife's family and associates.
Just self interest I guess.

Religious dogma explains a lot of his votes.

Always good to see the fascist defeated, but disturbing 48% consider he was suitable for a second tern. Like Trump he probably won't recognise the result

100% right on that!

“Jair Bolsonaro has yet to concede. The campaign had in part been so tense because the far-right president had cast doubts - without offering any evidence - on the reliability of Brazil's electronic voting system.” BBC

The playbook among the new age radical right appears to be that if they lose they keep denying it until someone acts against them. Trump, le Pen, Lukashenko. Johnson tried it earlier this summer.

Yeah, I get the feeling this one's going to run and run. Could be an equivalent of the Jan 6th shitshow – but maybe worse...

For those who don't know, Neymar (and several other Brazilian footballers) have been very outspoken in their support for Bolsonaro. The only active Brazilian player who is opposed to Bolsonaro, AFAIK, is Richarlison.

Brazilians now mocking him in the streets, saying he'll have to declare his taxes...

Love it. Takes a lot for Brazilians to mock their best player a month before the World Cup so you get the sense they really needed it.

Beginning to look like the US election.

Brazil
2014 votes:
54.5 million for Roussef, 51 million for Neves - Total 105.5 million
2018 votes:
57.8 million for Bolsonaro, 47 Million for Haddad - Total 104.8 million
2022 votes:
58.2 million for Bolsonary, 60.3 Million for Lula - Total 118.5 million

Why is Bolsonaro a fascist on here?

Latin America's history since WW2 has been a fight between populism and dictatorship. The left populist Lula wins, the right dictatorials try to stop it.
