They had their voicemail hacked. That doesn't result in locking your phone in a safe. If you are hacked as you think you are a millionth visitor to a website, it is on you. You are making some pretty broad assumptions that she has been the victim of some CSI/Mission Impossible stuff.
Also, the report is that her personal phone was hacked, with private and sensitive data on, not a work phone. It's not stated if that was personal data only, or matters that might be more nationally significant. However, if the reports are true, and it's now in a nuclear bunker, it suggests its not just her wordle history and tiktok account that Putin has access too.

Probably why he felt able to confidently state how useless she was. Total embarrassment to this country. The fact she was considered suitable as Prime Minister shows the depths to which the Tory party has sunk.

LONDON, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss's personal phone was hacked by suspected agents working for Russian President Vladimir Putin when she was foreign minister, the Daily Mail reported on Saturday.

Those agents gained access to "top-secret details" of negotiations with international allies in addition to private messages exchanged with Truss's close friend Kwasi Kwarteng, who later became finance minister, the report said.

The messages are believed to have included discussions with senior international foreign ministers about the war in Ukraine, including details about arms shipments, it added.

Why on earth was she doing this kind of thing with a personal phone, and why was it covered up / she allowed to continue to become PM?!

It is unbelievable that you are trying to conflate the two and testament that you will defend the Tories no matter what reprehensible shit they have done.
suggest you read my opinion on Truss. the comparison is fair as people get hacked by criminals, except apparently when you dont like them its the victims fault.

putting a phone in safe is tabloid flourish. we dont know what happened, a dodgy link or a sophiticated attack, those pinning this on the person are making the assumptions. have a phone compromised by any hack is not a risk once taken off the network. a lot of assumptions being extracted from what a Mail on Sunday article doesn't say, because the story is so thin. obviously the narrative is in now, everyone is onboard (with a Mail story).

Of course it’s still at risk if compromised even without a sim. You wouldn’t want it to go missing, physically get in the wrong hands etc especially if it’s known to be comprised with classified or secret documents on there that shouldn’t be.

Agencies will still want access to it for forensics

It's quite simple. If she did what every Government Minister (and civil servant) is very stringently instructed to do from their first junior post, then her private phone should only be used for private business and her Government phone for Government business, and there really is no excuse for any interchange between the two. This is simple Governmental basics although not so widely practiced since the arrival of Johnson's Brexit cabal, from what I understand.

Any civil servant using a private phone for any discussions, texts, whatsapps etc concerning Government business would be sacked for gross misconduct and rightly so.

So if Russia now know that LIz was going to be late home and the Cat needed feeding, that she was picking up milk on the way home and did her husband want anything from Tesco's or 'you'll never guess who that Tarty mum from the Kid's school has been sleeping with', why would the phone have to be locked away in a bunker ???

Can anyone help with this.

Is there any word on how the newspaper got hold of the story or any thoughts on why a paper which has acted as the de facto publishing arm of tory central office for decades run a damaging story?

Maybe so, although I work for a large and very risk-sensitive private business and have legitimate full access to my work emails and cloud storage from my personal phone - it's the modern way.

But that’s because it’s your companies (terrible) policy.

Government workers especially those at the top of a department have a strictly defined policy which looks to be broken here.

I’d throw her and Braverman in prison to be honest

I've just realised that it was her fault. We beat Leicester on 1 September. She became Prime Minister on 4th. We didn't win a single game during her premiership and, after she went on 24th October we won our next game. Let's be grateful she was so rubbish they got rid of her quickly. Our football team would have been relegated along with our credit rating.

Why they ran the story, I think explains how they got hold of it. Basically the whole Tory brand is contaminated. If Truss and Kwateng can be cast as the villains and they are both toast anyway, maybe the public will forget about all the other stuff over time and the Tories can become re-electable and maybe bring back good old Boris?

Yup, terrible policy.

Even more so on a personal level. Put work on your personal device, it's no longer personal. Company subject to a dawn raid? Used your personal device for work purposes? Sorry - that's a work device and can be searched.

In fairness (with regard to your first point), where people have their work mail on their phone, it would be encrypted so not so easy to hack.

Totally agree on your second point - It's also a terrible idea from a work/life balance perspective, always the opportunity to have a sneaky peak at your work mail or worse still, have it popping up.
