That last paragraph is the best bit of advice you will receive. The most important bit of equipment you have are your eyes and an understanding of light, colour and texture.
Another book I've just remembered, which in my view is excellent in many different photo situations, is "Within the Frame" by David du Chemin, a Canadian photographer. He puts great emphasis on vision and taking pictures which tell a story. Take photographs which tell the viewer what it feels...
