After the unthinkable happened on Tuesday, the Albion went into this game a measly two points ahead of Cardiff - with notable tricky fixtures to come. On a run of four straight league defeats, our home form completely deserting us... in all honesty, it’s been awful.

And all this made Wolves a very, very, very big game - with Spurs away on Tuesday night, it was vital we stopped the slide, we got back to basics and achieved some sort of result. As hugely valuable as all points are at this stage, it was almost equally important

Where to start? How do you begin to document, or even start to explain, such an abject, horrible capitulation - just seven days on from one of the club’s proudest days in recent times. That largely the same groups of players, a week on from being lauded for their efforts at Wembley by 35,000 Albion fans, slunk from pitch, to escape the furious disappointment of a near emptied Amex, simply beggars ...

Looking back on the game after a sobering and lengthy trek back up to Manchester, it would be tempting to file this game away as unremarkable - an expected result, a straightforward occasion, and a minor footnote in the story of Manchester
City marching imperiously to an unprecedented potential quadruple.

But after putting my key in the door at 6am Sunday morning, collapsing on my bed with my Albion scarf still draped around my neck, my mind refused sleep. I got out my laptop, after an enjoyable browse of NSC and #bhafc, rewatched the
highlights in all their blue and white magnificence. This was a special day. Without question, a game that will live long in the memory, with all the pride and emotion to go with it.

With positivity at an all-time high following the Albion’s dramatic FA Cup victory over Miiiiiiiiiillllllllwall, attention turned back to the league and Southampton at home. A very, very big game in the context of our season as a whole; win, and safety would be within our grasp. A loss, and we’d be looking nervously over our shoulders once again. After the lull and quiet of the International break, the fans were ready for the Albion adventure to explode into life again - it was time to ...

A week on from the incredible victory at Selhurst Park, the attention turned to East London, and a huge opportunity for more history. Championship Millwall standing between the Albion and a first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 - you have to say, a hugely winnable tie. Saturday’s action saw Palace knocked out at Watford (snigger), City scraping past Swansea, and Wolves progress into the last four after beating Manchester United. One spot remaining...could the Seagulls join them?

Into the Lion's Den, as strong a team as Chris could have picked. Excitement reaching fever pitch, let’s do it boys. Let’s get to Wembley.

An absolutely vital 3 points last time out, safety deliciously close. Home wins over the struggling Cardiff and Southampton, and a couple of away draws for good measure ought to do it. Where better to start?

So to Palace away, and the biggest game of our season so far. Of course, the game didn’t start at 12:30pm on Saturday 9th. Nor did it start at 11:30, when the team news tweet notification popped up on my phone. Not when I woke up and crawled out of bed, my stomach tormented with nerves, not even a week prior after the conclusion of our vital home win over Huddersfield. Arguably, the embers of this fiery rivalry have been quietly flickering on since our historic victory at the Amex

    Huddersfield then. Massive.

After a long run of games with little reward, things have rather come to a head. Yes, we really did ‘acquit ourselves well’ at Old Trafford, and at home to Liverpool, but we bagged zero points. Yes, it’s true, that Ben Foster and Tom Heaton were the stars of their respective shows, and genuinely we did ‘deserve’ more than a point from those two fixtures, but a point is all we got. At Leicester midweek there’s a valid argument that we genuinely were the ‘better team’ – but again left empty handed.

There can be no excuses today.

Following Albion’s FA Cup fifth-round victory over Frank Lampard’s Derby County, the big news heading into the midweek fixture away at Leicester was the rapid appointment of Brendan Rodgers as the new Foxes boss, after “parting company” with Claude Puel on Sunday. Couldn’t even afford us a few more days of turmoil, could you Leicester? Not to mention affording Palace a 1-4 away victory in Puel’s final game in charge. An interesting appointment nonetheless, with some Celtic fans understandably frustrated at his sudden departure.

So – back to the Amex for a fourth straight Saturday, for a fifth round FA Cup clash with Championship Derby County. Team news is in, amid talk of illness and knocks in the camp. Glenn Murray is the one indispensable right now, given the lack of suitable back up, so he gets to rest a tight calf. Dunk too gets to rest an apparent niggle.

The starting XI still looks pretty strong, though there is very little strength on the bench, particular in attacking positions – Florin Andone’s stupid red card coming home to roost. Davy Pröpper is down to start, but

Back in December when the Premier League’s TV dates were confirmed, a few Albion fans (including myself) scoffed at the inclusion of Burnley at home. Following the two enthralling encounters of last season, both ending 0-0, it seemed odd that anyone would want to pay actual money to televise the fixture. More pertinently, it didn’t seem relevant - after amassing an impressive points tally as Christmas approached, many of the BHAFC faithful were looking up the table rather than down.

But this, of course, is the Albion we’re talking about. And where the Albion are concerned, nothing is ever straightforward.

    Oh. My. Days.

What a night. What a fantastic, crazy, epic night.

Wandering up to ground in the freezing rain – tense. Nervous. Excited. Huge, huge game. A win would be massive, the unthinkable crushing. Team news in – couple of changes – Montoya in for the injured Capitan, and super Glenn restored in place of Saturday’s match-winner Florin Andone.

    As for the visitors:

A ridiculously busy spell at work, has meant I’ve neglected this responsibility for a good while. In home games since I last found the time to pen anything (United), the Albion have drawn with Fulham (game turned on a missed penalty, great comeback, but ultimately two points dropped), lost to Spurs (showed a good side too much respect, but could have nicked an unlikely point), and beaten West Ham (solid defensive display, Murray clinical).

Coupled with a huge away win at Newcastle last time out, a pretty healthy

“Can we play you every week? Can we plaa-aaay you, every week?” For the smattering of Manchester United fans still left in the ground a minute into added time, hearing that from fans of (#teamslike)Brighton has really got to hurt. Especially for the (corporate) covert Red sat in front of us, who’d proudly shown his phone to his mate at kick off, announcing that ‘this win’ was going to bring home his £600 acca. What a terrible, terrible shame, for him, that it didn’t work out.

What a win. What a performance, from Chris Hughton’s men. ...

    Watford 2-0 Albion

In an uneven, unmemorable game festooned with poor passing and uncertain defending, Albion failed to produce a shot on target in a start to the season that felt ominous rather than promising.

Only the scoreline, rather than the respectability, of last season's initial defeat to Manchester City was repeated, and Albion's two further games in August – a visit from Manchester United and a trip to Liverpool – will surely yield ...

What a night. Premier League status confirmed, with two matches to spare. A great occasion, a tremendous effort, and most of all a thoroughly deserved victory.

Every player worthy of the highest praise.

Little Maty Ryan, less busy than might have been expected, went about his business in the tidiest of fashion, plucking high balls at will - plunging to save when he finally had to.
