The trigger was us successfully staying up. This morning, replying on the Maupay thread, I checked stats on our Neal once again, remembered this and thought that I’d probably be safe in assuming that 44 points was once again enough for safety. I thought I’d revisit the same stats page on the Premier League website and compare season for season. As a bonus, Maupay has been involved in 33 PL games both this season and at the time I looked last season.

Timing this thing is always impossible. Writing a season preview before the transfer window has slammed shut is a fool’s errand – a wise Stat Brother said that recently – but writing one after the big kick off is after timing, he said conjuring the spirit of Enrest.

And, of course, the internet is full of other people’s predictions which means you may be influenced by them, knowingly or not, and you may well have commented or even started threads about said predictions.

That's it, we’re safe and live to play another season in the Premier League. In reality we should have a healthy cushion over Fulham at the end of the season, though at the turn of the year, with barely a gap and only two wins, many including myself were worried we were in danger. Those who were more optimistic and long term then have been proven right, to a degree, yet for all the talk of progress being made it’s hard to escape the feeling that we’ve underachieved. NSC is currently full of debate around whether we are under achieving and, if we are, is it Graham Potter’s fault. End of July. Normally, I’d be writing my season preview about now. The previous season would have finished in May in either spring heat or an unseasonal downpour, with a half arsed lap of honour, beer, handshakes and hugs in the bar afterwards and one final moan about train queues and sing-song on said train.

Well, that was a pretty good Easter, wasn’t it?

It’s been an incredible two full seasons under Chris Hughton. Really, we should have gone up last year. Our record would have been good enough in almost any other season. But we didn’t.
