I thought we were dreadful on Saturday and very lucky to win. Should've been 3-4 down at half time. Some games last season we were excellent all game and lost.

Why can't football fans actually assess a performance properly?

I know there's a whole tribalism thing going on - which I'll never understand - but the player ratings threads are a real eye opener. 6's, 7's and 8's across the 90 minutes. The ball bounces in off Ben Mee's arse in the 94th minute? The same players get 4's and 5's.

Why can't football fans actually assess a performance properly?

All the assessments I’ve seen are variations on the theme of ‘a game of two halves’.

But what I noticed was that most people’s MoM, Mr Duffy, failed to properly block an effort by Gudmundsson in the first half whose shot was a centimetre or two from going in off the post. Then, he failed to jump properly for a corner and Mee sneaked in behind him a smashed the ball into the bar, again, a centimetre or two from scoring. If those two shots had gone in, I’m sure that many would be offering to drive him to his next loan location (albeit with a pub lunch on the way there).

Just for the lols, I listened to 606 on Saturday.

Sure enough, after one game and as a result of the results, you had Arsenal fans ringing in saying the manager has to go, and Man United fans ringing in saying they're going to win the treble :lolol:

Some thing never change.

Radio Sussex also thought we were poor. Post match Cantor/Aspinall agreed “The less said about the match itself, the better”. Says it all, despite the lovely three points.

Just human nature. A win and 99% of supporters are happy. A loss, even with a good display and the majority are down in the dumps (very quiet park n ride bus passengers for example).

The player ratings thing can get silly. For example, say we get torn apart with some defenders having shockers, in a win or draw. Some nsc’ers take umbrage if 1’s to 4’s are given to any player, even if individually they were error strewn and outclassed. Posters so defensive, as if 0 to 4 are illegal in their head.

It's the referee thing I find amusing. If Albion lose they were biased.

For me it's admittedly all about how I feel at final whistle.

Outplaying the opposition and drawing / losing feels horrible.

Playing not so well and winning or drawing feels better.

Obviously playing well and winning is the best outcome!

Errrr... the headline and the post dont match all that well..?

Anyway, it was a poor first half no doubt and as GP said, a bit of luck was involved this time around. But the same thing is true for Burnley as they were for Brighton last season... if you dont take your chances its difficult to win.

I really think we’re the worst in the EPL at that. Seen some Amex games where the ref’s whistled when we kept blatantly fouling, people in the stands putting their own health at risk with their temper and then a predictable long nsc thread about a corrupt ref.

If I were attempting to assess a performance the player ratings thread is the very last place I'd look.

It's an echo chamber for all your pre-existing prejudices.

'Groß 5 - did nothing too slow'.
'but Groß had 8 assists, did 5 turns and scored with a bicycle kick in injury time'.
'but he's too slow'

I always assume anyone contributing on that thread writes their post before the game and sends it after.

I thought the NSC mantra was 'when we win we were lucky, when we lose we were not unlucky' ?

I even felt that was generous.

We turned up at about 65 minutes as Lallana warmed to the game.

That's why the bookies with all their analytical data have us finishing 10th to 12th.
They take the emotion out of how they risk their money and base it on the evidence of likely performance.

It's us, the tribal fans that get emotionally drained by individual results rather than looking at the bigger picture.

It's in our DNA to be frustrated and criticise when mistakes happen during overall good performances.

Dreadful first half and should have been 3 nil down, excellent second half and by far the better team.
Through these blue and white striped glasses anyway.

I thought the mantra was if we win it’s thanks to Potter and if we lose it’s because of the players.

Far more negative. The rule is never give bhafc any credit and always put any good results down to pure luck.

Is that why there was a Potter in/out poll every week even when the players missed 294 chances per game?

I'm as interested in the commonly expressed view that we 'should' have been 3 or 4 down by half-time. No we shouldn't. The fact that they hit the woodwork doesn't mean that it 'should' have been a goal. For instance, the one that hit the post - if he had shot more accurately so that the trajectory of the ball was such that it would have gone between the posts, it may well have deflected off a defender and gone wide anyway!

'Could' have been 3-up, fine. But not 'should'. They were not three goals better than us in the first half.

In Albion Unlimited on Tuesday JC/Warren from Radio Sussex said this about the team. They acknowledged they had some luck, and didn't hit their stride until the 2nd half but Warren said
"I saw great character in those players, we took the game to them and we were deserved winners. You can see the togetherness in this side. "
and JC.
" i thought they showed a real grit and determination, they're never out of games - its impressive. "
They also praised various players - especially Shane Duffy and there was lots of praise for Potter.
