Bloom is a big fan of statistical analysis. And the stats show that strikers are over-valued. We're gonna have to Moneyball it if we want to get any higher in the table because we can't compete financially with the big boys. Moneyball is all about finding value in the face of popular opinion. The popular opinion here is that we MUST sign a striker if we want to improve. I suggest that stats show that this is not true. At least in the case where we have to overpay and not get good value. What we need is to convert those Xg into goals and I think the metrics show that this can be achieved by finding value in improving the team in the other positions to improve our goal haul from the other positions other than striker. This is why Tony Bloom repeatedly refuses to "get is checkbook aaaaaaat" every transfer window with regards to strikers.

It really isn't as simple as Buy Striker = Get Goals. But then we do have some rather simple people on here.

Brilliant post. It does make you wonder if there’s been some kind of moneyball decision or edict from above. I guess they would never discuss this but would be fascinating to know.

Strikers are clearly a very difficult position to recruit for. Anyone who’s any good will be wanted by many clubs who will bid huge money. So our best options are veterans, young unproven talent and players from lesser leagues.

That said I like the model of players like Nunez, Gonzalez. Young exciting forwards forging a reputation. Give them the platform of the PL and if goes well we can sell for enormous profit. The main obstacle appears to be getting them to join.

Happy to debate anything with you, sorry if I wasn't thoughtful enough in my musings for you. I don't post much so not sure why I was the target of your frustration about constantly posting the same message but I'm sorry if the great HWT thinks my post was pathetic. Must try harder to impress the only opinion that matters.

Apologies. That was enormously pompous. It is one of my failings

Or the players improve.

Yep.

Personally I’ve never understood the obsession with new signings. The thing I’m always most excited about at the start of a new season is how the team develop tactically and the progress of individual players. It’s one of the best things about having a brilliant and innovative coach like Potter.

I’m looking forward to seeing and expecting gradual improvement from the likes of Connolly, Alzate, Mac Allister Moder and Karbownik this season.

I'd be interested to know whether those like you (and me) who like to see continuity, coaching and the creation of something better from what may once have been ordinary clay, are also the sort who likes to develop and work on relationships in real life, and whether those who are always screaming for new singings are the sort who have always got their eye on the next bit of skirt*

*other pejorative descriptions, some gender-neutral, are available

Just a passing thought.

I think of Welbeck as an excellent player who I’ll be happy to see play for 25% of the season. Any more will be a bonus. The other forwards and any new signing are going to be the ones we rely on week in week out. Welbeck will fit in and chip in with goals occasionally. There is no way that we can rely on him as a main striker

The "oh dear" was for your sarcasm - lowest form of wit, don't you know!

Actually your ‘oh dear’ was a reply to another poster’s post. Oh dear.

Quite, which means we are light ability wise.

Well how do you think we got all those players?

They didn’t grow off a tree [emoji6]

I quite enjoy these annual battles against relegation, as long as the end result is the same. Battling to finish between 10th and 14th doesn't hold that much excitement to me.

Imo up front is the one position where it's best not to rotate too much. You want strikers playing week in week out to build consistency and confidence. Rotating the forward line (or having forwards in and out due to injury) makes it hard to build consistency and get into a goal scoring form. Of course, there are some players that do well coming off the bench, but not all forwards are like that.

Yes that's a good point.

This notion of a relegation batlle always perplexes me, as really isn't every club in a relegation battle until they have accrued enough points to be safe.

Last season we finished 13 points above Fulham, so was there really a "battle" or was it just in the heads of some fans and journalists who want to sell copy?

To be fair at one stage Fulham were only a point behind.

At one stage we were even, but then so was everyone else :)

It’s just this concept of a battle that I struggle with, especially when having not actually been in one of the relegation positions.

But you can say the same about all positions and areas on the pitch from goal keeper, defence and midfield to the forward line.
