Gods country fortnightly
Caught the first 2 news headlines in one ear, something along the lines that BJ not happy that Glaswegians die at 59 then not happy with a sugar tax that would motivate producers to reformulate food.

Trolley Johnson is all over the place

It would normally get moved to the bearpit within seconds if it had been started up by some posters and others that didn't want to see it would be none the wiser.

NSC needs levelling up.

Thank god Boris is levelling up.

Since the subject is "a masterclass in gibberish" I wanted to give you, the NSC expert in that very thing, a chance to pipe up before I sent it down the tube.

It is a constant sauce of amusement/bewilderment why the 'how can you vote for Boris/the Tories' question keeps getting asked when I assume everyone asking it would have voted for or preferred Corbyn's Labour party to be in power .... so they should ALL understand what it is like to want to see an obviously incompetent Leader in Number 10, ALL understand how it is possible to overlook the obvious shortcomings of those around him, ALL understand what it's like voting for a party mired in claims about racism/antisemitism, ALL understand our motivations to choose who governs us is multi-faceted (most times we hold our noses and vote for what we think is the least bad option).

Starmer is an obvious improvement (but still lacking charisma and political nous) on his predecessor but shaking the long Corbyn contagion will take time and Labours (ex) Brexit voters may never forgive him for wanting to ignore their democratic voice.

it's a bloody good point, corbyn/bungle****; i think what some of us are astounded about is,

how did it ever come to this?

I never said that Boris had dealt with Starmer, just that Starmer had never dealt a knockout blow on Boris. In fact he barely gets to lay even a glove on Boris.

The first one or two PMQs it looked like Starmer had the necessary ammunition to trouble Boris, but Boris soon worked out how to handle his questions and since then Starmer has been effectively toothless. Bit like a football manager working out how to deal with the opposition during a match.

starmer plays by the parliament rules, and then bj runs away, evading the question, only occasionaly being called out by the speaker; what would you have ks do, hit him with a sword?

Indeed, which is why people continually pretending they have any sort of moral high ground lecturing others about their political choices when they wanted/preferred Corbyn in number 10 should wind their collective necks in.

On the plus side I remember a time when people were complaining about UK politics being incredibly boring and all the major parties offering no real choice .... be careful what you wish for!

Have you been busy? You normally pull out the ‘Mouldy Boots victim card’ way before post #71

I appreciate this may come as something as a shock but NSC isn’t always all about you.

Good news for Newhaven, now let's hope the council start investing properly in the Town Centre. It's so run down these days. Thanks to all the other businesses trying to make a difference.

If someone could come in and redevelop the Marina with shops, restaurants and housing the whole place would be transformed overnight.

It will be wasted by LDC as usual, like £23M spent on the bridge going nowhere.

Boris Johnsons only purpose is to highlight how broken our political system is and why voter apathy is so dangerous. why we allowed the political equivalent of Tim Nice but dim and Frank Spencer into the control of our country during a national emergency is a shame to us all

Perhaps you should not have made me a victim.

It isn't about me is it???

When a mod bans you effectively for racism, you do tend to put me in the spotlight.

Way too quick to pull the trigger, but of course everyone's mate (no need to name him) had been pressuring your finger.

If the levelling up of abuse was applied then how many would have had a ban, that have not? Between 8-10, no doubt some are second accounters giving double or even treble abuse.

I had expected more from you, a calm finger and to read what I was actually saying.

If you throw the r-word at me, I will defend myself and act accordingly, wouldn't you?

An apology would be accepted, whether it was private or an open one.

Bloody Worthing!
Yes of course it was gibberish, but that's not really the point. No one seriously expects Johnson to come up with a coherent policy that addresses fundamental societal problems; that's not his job. His job is to win elections and he does this by pressing certain buttons that resonate with parts of the electorate.

So what we've got here is the usual amalgam of populism (who could disagree with a levelling up agenda sold on the basis of win-win?) and cynicism - targeting specific red-wall constituencies with bribes/rewards. The latter is a particular Johnsonian nuance. He knows that (some) voters will think that the problems in their locality are not in any caused by 10 years of Tory governments but will be connected in people's minds with their Labour MP (and council)and thus playing on the 'what's Labour ever done for us' vibe. Promise them (or hint at) a few bits and pieces of infrastructural improvement (whist simultaneously losing them any EU regional aid!) and, Bob's your uncle, the votes will follow.

Meanwhile Tory councillors in places like Worthing are bleating that their core voters (blue wall) are deserting them because of the attention being paid to the north and (bingo!) Johnson plays the 'win-win' card - which is of course nonsense as any regional policy must involve redistribution of resources. But that doesn't matter because he'll simply tell a few more porkies, crack a few jokes and bluster his way through it. And get away with it - because getting away with it is his REAL talent.

And back on topic, it's just a shame there isn't a bigger budget for this 'levelling up' thing

Brexit admin costs dwarf Levelling Up Fund

The government is set to spend twice as much on Brexit administration as its flagship Levelling-up Fund. A total of £12 billion has been set aside for departments and devolved administrations to help them cope with the logistics of leaving the European Union. The new figure was published on Thursday, in the government’s annual statement on European Union spending.

The £12 billion figure dwarfs the £4.8 billion allocated to the Levelling Up Fund, of which £3.6 billion will go towards British towns via the Towns Fund.

Hopefully the Brexit exit costs will decline over the years whilst the levelling up costs will evolve over the life of Parliament. Your comparison is meaningless.

Not my comparison, it's the Government's

And hopefully, GDP won't keep falling, an alternative to the Northern Ireland protocol that has eluded everyone for last 5 years will be 'discovered', the EU will suddenly decide to give UK Financial Services equivalence, we will actually be capable of implementing some sort of Import controls and taxes to stop smuggling and tax evasion without emptying our shelves, Exports get back to the level they were before (with their associated additional costs disappearing) the fishing industry will get back to what it was, UK companies won't be forced to relocate to the EU, we won't continue to break International Law etc etc

Because if we do that, we won't have to hope, it will definitely make Brexit exit costs decline significantly.

And the levelling up process will 'evolve' over the life of Parliament. Hopefully
