[Albion] 25 points dropped from winning position

Worst record in PL...

Why we CAN defend well until we score, but after that everything is changing for wrong?

Weak mentality? Wrong tactical instructions? Why we can not LEARN ON THIS MISTAKE at all?

Obviously I know is impossible to defend it every time but if you add 25 points we would be 5th in the table right now...

Your point is completely valid, but maybe not tonight, that was a worldie finish unfortunately. Any other day and that shot goes wide or hits the post.

Excellent finish tonight by the WH player....never dropping any of those points is a bit far fetched...however half would make it less of a battle

I can't be arsed to check back and see if it is true, but someone in the office mentioned to me this week that we had gone 1-0 up, but not won, 11 times this season. 12 now if true.

Lots of things could have happened to stop that going in.

White originally bangs it against Bissouma. We give the winger a load of time. White rolls around on the floor instead of looking for the block. We give Benrama a load of time on the edge of the box. Sanchez is standing too far to the right.

Not going to criticise the defence generally, (though we didn't do that well). It's the general pedestrian approach to attacking that cost us the chance of 3 points. In this league you have to expect to concede the odd decent strike. You need to get your own good goals.

Burn and Bissouma made a complete hash of a clearance which gave them possession on the edge of the area. Good finish though as you say

It's because we haven't looked for the second goal with anything like enough ambition. Doesn't apply do much tonight, but it does for most of them

We had a make-shift defense without March, Dunk, Veltman and Lamptey....all first choices. I’m not going to be too harsh tonight.

While it was a good finish, Bissouma made two horrendous mistakes in the build up - the first to let it run across him and lose the ball in the middle of the pitch 40 yards from our goal, and then to panic and smash it into a teammate immediately before they got the ball in the box.

The OP’s point is valid in the context of tonight and to be honest summed up the majority of our season. Our mentality appears to be extremely weak when ahead. I’m not sure how we can look so solid for 85 minutes, score and then immediately concede. It’s happened several times and is something we need to improve for next season.

Extremely disappointing and a goal that almost certainly cements our position in 17th, when a win would have seen us jump two places.

If that was the only time we'd conceded a few minutes after scoring I'd agree but this is another annoying little pattern that needs to be remedied in the close season.

A lot going on in that goal, a real hash of a clearance but it looked like Webster was taken out and possibly White too, so no pressure on the ball. A lot of Premier League quality players should be able to at least work the keeper from there given time and space.

There are a number of factors this season. Some of them self inflected others out of our hands:

Take the Man United away and Southampton home games, VAR absolutely robbed us (6 of the 25 right there)
Wolves away - a stupid red card cost us (3 points)
Man United home was just insane and one of those games (3 points there)
West Brom and Wolves home were poor (4 points)
West Ham and Burnley away we didn’t deserve much more than a point and were hanging on especially against Burnley (4 points)
Leicester simply beaten by a better team with a goal keeping error thrown in (3 points)
Tonight was sloppy given how long left (2 points)

The point is I don’t think when you look through points lost it’s not one thing. It’s exciting to think we have this much scope to improve.

We sit so deep after scoring. Once we do score we bang out gash clearances. Plus worldies always seem to find their way in against us

Wouldn’t be so bad if GPott didn’t keep saying “we’re going to learn from that as a group” when quite clearly we NEVER do.

It would be far more palatable if he just said, “We don’t really think about it to be honest. After all, what the chances of that happening again?”

It’s an odd stat, that people read a little too negatively.

Remember that in order to drop 25 points, from those positions, you’ve had to actually TAKE the lead in all those games. There are clubs in this league that dream of ever having those leads to throw away...

The equaliser tonight sums up the way it’s gone this season.

- Starts off with a bizarre mistake from one of our players (Bissouma blasting it into Lallana’s back)
- Bad luck as the ball lands perfectly for one of their players
- Bad luck as one of their players accidentally flattens two of ours putting them out of the game for a few crucial seconds (White should’ve got up sooner, Dunk would’ve)
- Player for the opposition scores the best goal of his season

This sort of nonsense has happened in so many matches this season.

But as Alan Hanson said, you can’t win anything with kids.

We’ve got a very young team. They need to learn to be a lot smarter when we have the lead and they will.

Where as the Potter Out Campaign will never learn or understand the concept of long term development (despite Tony’s success in his strategy of getting us to the promised land of the EPL), they’ll never get beyond ‘the manager is there to be shot at’ dogma and they’ll never be able to divorce themselves from the unbearable emotion (we all feel when we lose a game or lose a lead) to throw negativity at our manager.
