[TV] Shameful Capitulation To Snowflake Social Media Angst

But no one stopped Azaria speaking, no one took The Simpsons off the air, no one "banned" Apu. There has been an apology, Nobody's free speech has been in any way impinged. Unlike, say for instance, the government and police having the power to stop any protest that they fancy on account that it might be a bit noisy.

When it started it simply wasn't seen as "bad" that Apu wasn't played by a South Asian actor, just as the Black and White Minstrel show was accepted at its time. Now these things are regarded as somewhere between awkward and outright racist and you can see why.

Apu was a perfectly legitimate character. Many convenience stores are owned by Indians worldwide and many in America get robbed at gunpoint regularly and have patrons like Homer. But who's to say that, with hindsight, had he been played by an actor of the same ethnicity it would have been more authentic, potentially funnier in a much subtler kind of way and kind of self knowing? In fact - better.

As an alternative I give you Chef. Isaac Hayes was perfectly happy to do gags about the size of his own cock but lost the plot when his religion was criticised,

I agree, The Simpsons basically stereotypes every character and what they do in the show. Apu is a stereotype, BECAUSE the show is sending up stereotypes of all kinds, and frequently sends up religion, culture, and politics.

If the actor of that character now feels awkward about that, and sounds like he's spent a fair amount of time reflecting on it, not just reacting to 'a few hipsters in a bar in Brooklyn', then that is also fair enough I would have thought.

I love the OP 'overreacting' to others reacting. I'm getting upset because others have got upset at something they shouldn't get upset about! :moo:

Nah. Not his opinion. Victim of some wanky twitter flaming torch campaign. 99% of whom are guaranteed to be offended on somebody else's behalf that probably weren't even offended in the first place

As opposed to yourself, who is offended by other people being offended on behalf of other people who may or may not be offended

I suggest everyone just relaxes . . . . with a copy of the Mail on Sunday

I do love to "relax" with a Mail on Sunday, especially if there's a great article by Julia Hartley-Brewer about how the lefttards are stopping free speech by burning every Union Jack they find, and after only 30 seconds with Julia's words it frees up the whole rest of the day to put tickets on badly parked cars

Most of NSCs trendy liberal elite champagne socialists just wouldn't understand the ecstasy this gives the common working man.

It's because they are a snowflake, getting offended at small things that don't affect them.

No. A snowflake is someone offended by extreme right wing things, reactionary things, sexism and racism, and related 'left wing' issues, and is only ever called a snowflake by someone who likes to call a spade a spade, know that women and foreigners are never really going to fit in, and as for the islamists and poofs, well, there you are. Someone who gets offended on behalf of people who are not actually offended themselves, for example someone 'forced' (by Trained Socialists) to reflect on their attitudes to race/gender etc., is a broflake.

It reminds me of the Benny Hill saga when he was finally taken off the TV because he was no longer in step with the current mood and deemed offensive. I watched a lot of his stuff on youtube and it was very, very funny. The members of Hills Angels were interviewed and they said they were well paid, treated with respect and professionalism and really enjoyed being on the show. He was like Ronny Barker in that he took his job as a comedian very seriously always rehearsing and refining his act until he was happy with it. Apparently when he died he was practically a broken man who couldn't understand what he had done that was so terrible, all he had ever tried to do was make people laugh

Quick question: Do you carry around a milk crate or mini step ladder in order to reach the windscreen of SUV's and the like? I know the trendy liberal elite enjoy driving around in these Tooting Tractors, it must take the shine of the ecstasy a little.

All this fuss caused by people on Twitter (allegedly) exercising their right to free speech.

Now everyone is offended but we must hold on to our right to free speech . . . No not like that Twitter users with a different opinion to me.

The real question here is: Why does Martin Freeman keep playing Americans?

Along with the Bigot Pit, I think NSC needs a slightly tamer version, The 'You can't say anything anymore' pit or something.

The 'if you say your English you get arrested and thrown in jail," pit.

:lolol:

Perhaps complete with an emoji of Stewart Lee looking sarcastic, to be used in a similar manner to how they use that Sid James with a pipe one on OwlsTalk.

Most things taken to an extreme are usually not healthy.

Being nasty about someone because they are different in some way , and by that I mean any way not just race or colour but maybe the way they look or hair colour ie bright ginger or very white etc is all unkind and unnecessary and should be socially unacceptable.

However allowing someone to voice a character that is not their ethnicity , ie perhaps an Indian accent or a Caribbean or Irish accent shouldn’t matter at all if they are talented enough to sound like the accent they are portraying . It’s called acting - make believe . You don’t have to always play yourself . This has nothing to do with being nasty .

So this fashion of apologising for playing certain roles is ridiculous and is being pushed by a small section of so called extreme lefties .

Correct........

So this fashion of apologising for playing certain roles is ridiculous and is being pushed by a small section of so called extreme lefties .

.....and then both wrong and contradictory to your first paragraph.

Well done for staying in character though. I'd have actually been disappointed if you'd left it at the end of paragraph 1.

Typical of the bigoted heightism that otherwise oh so liberal posters on here display. No wonder everyone's started to call it Middle Class Chat.

Yes I do :(

It’s amusing and quite naive that you think that actors aren’t being forced to apologise for fear of the social media mob, are you a regular user of Twitter? If you are, I suggest you look at the vitriol that gets aimed at these actors who portray characters of different ethnicities, look how many people have been forced out of roles in recent years.

Should gay actors only be allowed to play gay characters? Should white characters like James Bond, only be played by white men?

Should you be allowed to play the part of a Yorkshireman if you're not from Yorkshire? Should you play a cockney if you weren't born within earshot of Bow Bells? Where does it end?
