Why? Because the starting players hadn’t unpicked the Everton defence in 85 minutes?

“Boss, I’ve been trying to crack the safe for ages and the cops are nearly here. What should I do?”

“Maybe we should try hitting it with this feather duster, that’ll sort it.”

At least Ali J has scored this season which is more than can be said for the other attacking options. He also also contributed from the bench before, the assist against Man United springs to mind.

I also think Potter wanted to guarantee the point tonight so moved to one up top. Don’t blame him, a good point in the bag.

a galaxy far far away
It's more the timing of the sub, rather than the sub himself I disagree with.

Zeqiri for Maupay and Ali J for Gross on the hour

You’re right. No other attacking player has scored for us at any point this season.

It is clear Potter doesn't have faith in Ali J, Zeqiri, Connolly or Izquierdo to change a game. On the plus side, that point means the club can plan for next season with a little more certainty. 3 points against Sheff Utd on 24th April should do it, and then we can start turning the transfer wheels.

Why not? Would rather Mac as he’s been class but... why not?

Quite. Brighton substitute enters the fray, cue massed projectile vomiting

It's almost as if people have an agenda

Why? 20 odd times and nothing comes of it, ever.

I love GP but his subs, and the times he makes them, infuriate me.

Why? Because the starting players hadn’t unpicked the Everton defence in 85 minutes?

I think the point is not just who comes on - and let's be honest here, Ali J and BDB would not have been most peoples choice from the options available - but more why GP leaves it so late to make the changes.

This was an Everton side missing loads of first choice players and with nothing on the bench. We should have pushed for the win but Potter seems more obsessed with keeping one point which, given how many late goals we have conceded, is not the best plan. His substitutions make his CH's look positively adventurous.

Those subs were all about fresh legs, and Everton still possess quality players that can hurt you in James Rodriguez and Richarlison. I think Potter was right to bag a point because it ramps up pressure on the clubs below us.

We have to accept that we don't have the strikers at the moment so edge towards safety and then maybe in the last 5 games we can have a better look at the likes of Caicedo and Cashman.

I know I am right, of the three out and out attacking players in our bench tonight Izzy and Zeqiri haven’t scored this season and he has.

I’m sorry but I can’t get excited when Ali J comes on. He’s had his chances, that header against Sheffield Utd did it for me. Really wanted him to do well and he seems popular with the team but he’s just not done the business.

AJ is arguably the best shot in the matchday squad, why he doesn't get at least ten minutes is beyond me.

The game was there for the taking IF we had a decent striker on the pitch. . . . Or a player who can pick a spot and hit it within a quarter of an hour of seeing it.

This season his shooting accuracy is 16.7%, which puts him 15th in our squad.

Last season his shooting accuracy was 18.2%, which put him 18th in our squad.

My advice if you were trying to crack a safe and the cops are nearly there....would be to leg it.

Out of all the players we have, Ali J is probably the most likely to score something from nothing.

But obviously, most of the time he won't.

He's just a wildcard option for the final few minutes.

This.

Aware this is grasping at straws, but he arguably had the best effort against Palace, well blocked by Cahill. The choice that day was him or Connolly and - given Palace were restricting us to shots from distance - AJ was the right call.

Then put on someone who might. Izquierdo or MacAllister perhaps.

Perhaps you are forgetting a certain bicycle kick that he scored when he was substituted against Chelsea. But he was subbed on with 20 minutes to go then. Harder to do with 3 minutes.

I agree with this. We were playing well but not creating as much as we usually do. Crucially we were also limiting Everton. We didn’t need to push for a win and Potter took the sensible option tonight. Great game management.
