England manager Gareth Southgate says footballers should be offered the coronavirus vaccine soon because of the risks of playing during the pandemic.

Southgate said football had a "responsibility" to players who "we are asking to keep playing".

Could they be any further out of touch with public opinion?

They are travelling more than most other people. They're also the demographic which is about the lowest of the low in terms of priority and likelihood of being done any harm by the virus (as super-fit people aged roughly 18-35). Once again the sense of entitlement coming out of football just sets the sport up to be knocked, which is a shame given the good work done by the likes of Marcus Rashford and others during the pandemic.

Before forming an opinion based on the headline it's worth considering what else Southgate said.

"We are asking them to keep playing.

"I was not in any way suggesting they should have been ahead of key workers and teachers who should be ahead but we are getting close to the points where it could be acceptable and actually, football could afford to save the NHS money by buying the vaccines and administering them."

Exemptions have allowed football to continue since its restart in June with players travelling for European fixtures in recent weeks.

Players are set to travel again for international matches later this month and some may have to quarantine on their return.

"They are having to take some risk going back to families and a lot of them have caught the virus because they have been working," Southgate said.

Personally I think they shouldn't be travelling. Still don't understand why European football and Internationals have continued during this period. If they are that concerned they would have cancelled them and just stuck to the domestic leagues. But of course it's about money, not anyone's health.

Unbelievable, are these the same footballers that are cuddling and promoting to the world that they don't give a shite about covid and the people it kills, and yet they will drop to the knee to make a statement.

They should be taking their turn like everybody else, unless of course the EPL, the FA or the PFL wishes to pay top whack and buy some doses.

Nope don't see that that changes anything simple answer they should not be travelling internationally for any football.

Err no ! We are not asking them to play during the pandemic. If they don’t want to play they should stay safe at home. I’m sure they could afford it. Plenty of others who can’t do so and therefore need the vaccine to be safe.

Once the over-50s (and vulnerable) are done then it won’t really matter what order the rest of the adult population get their jabs.

My nephew is 22 and has coeliac disease and so was given a jab. But he’s already had Covid which was two or three days of annoying grogginess and no more and he was presumably immune now anyway. Should he have had his dose before they’d finishing inoculating the over 50s?

Short answer is, a few random anomalies won’t make much difference. Footballers should probably wait their turn, but I don’t think it’s some heinous crime for Southgate to make a case for a few hundred exceptions.

Debate it, say no, that’s not right, wait your turn, that’s fine, but all this pearl-clutching and “How dare he” is just a bit silly.

One thing that was made clear from day one of the vaccine, it is not for sale.
HRH didn't queue jump, although her age put he at the top. I was surprised the PM hadn't had a jab yet, surely he is more important than any footballer.
No, you're out of touch with the rest of the UK Mr S. Shopworkers are more important than footballers. This 'being made' stuff can be pointed at 100's of jobs. Sadly Karen or Dave at the till earn less in a year than these guys get in a day.
