So many myths about GW who lied to start a battle, increased his slaves fourty fold in his lifetime and moved them every six months to keep them slaves. So much of American history is a lie including the founding fathers. No Liberty bell ringing and no 4th July signing.

America were in middle of Iraq and Afgan wars when Obama elected. All through election on a ticket of anti Iraq war. Like all politicians easy to make decisions when not in power. However soon found once in couldnt come over as quite so anti with 100s k american troops there. To have this plus financial meltdown when elected did very well to get a second term

Yes love American history and been lucky to visit Deadwood, Big Horn, Monument Valley, Tombstone etc. If you want to read an interesting book try, Lies my Teacher told many Names W Loewen. Worth a read.

Lincoln all day long! Can't stand any of the others. Saying that not that keen on any British Prime ministers either. Read James M McPherson's 'Battle cry of freedom.' Reread it during the last lockdown and it's a remarkable book. It was the basis for Ken Burns superb Civil War documentary series. Lincoln starts off immensely glib and short of support, and ends up a revolutionary driving the US forward. Had he not been assassinated America would have become a very different place. Had he lead reconstruction, instead of the horror created by Johnson, then messed up by Grant and sold down the river by Hayes - the racial problems that have blighted the US may never have developed. Perhaps segregation, the KKK and the legacy that Trump played with, could have been nipped in the bud. Eric Foners work on reconstruction points to an era of incredible opportunities. In fact it is only now that the US has as many black elected officials as there was in 1870.

Whilst I support the US in the revolution, I love the fact the UK agreed to return all of Washington's run away slaves when New York was surrendered. Then when the British had evacuated Washington marched in to find all his former slaves had been shipped away to freedom.

It must be good to actually visit the places from history in person, especially when trying to understand what really went on rather than the movie versions.
I will definitely have a look at that book,I have found it online and looks good. the sections about the portrayal of Christopher Columbus and also the relationship between the native Americans and Europeans is of particular interest to me at the moment.

I know very little about American politics and what each president did and didn't do. My only judgement comes from what interviews/speeches I watch and with that, my favourite has to be Obama.
It was refreshing to see a leader speak so clearly, it may have all been BS but at least it was correctly worded BS.

2 great books about the development of the US that cover well the meeting of Atlantic cultures are Howard Zinns 'a people's history of the US' and the absolute classic 'the many headed Hydra' by Peter Linebaugh and Marcu Rediker. The latter is also great on the development of the slave trade, pirates and witches in both the Americas and Britain.
