[Albion] Adam Webster is not a defender: discuss

I stand by the thread I started in December. The tongue in cheek copying of a daft thread title about Solly March was the clue that it was a bit tongue in cheek and intended for dicussion although that clearly went above the heads of the bully boys who piled in without considering the content properly and those who have made themselves look even more stupid by comparing his excellent form now to his average performances and decision making nearly three months ago. Since then he has gradually improved every aspect of his game and the defence has moulded in to a great unit and I'm as delighted as everyone else to see it. He is better now than he was. NSC is not a hive mind and we don't have to agree on everything. In his form when I posted in December, I had no confidence in him. Now I do. I won't be reading or responding to any more references to that thread. Before someone tries the old 'that touched a nerve routine, it didn't. NSC ain't that relevant to my mental state. But the Albion are and I'm off to dream of what went down tonight. Well done Webster and the boys. Happy Days:)

Back when this thread started, I maintained Webster wasn't as good as defending as Duffy. Overall a better player, but not as adept as doing the job for the position he's in.

Fair to say he's improved a HUGE amount, so I'm happy to half hold my hands up and say he's proved me wrong. He was outstanding last night – as he has been for some time. Some of the tackles he put in were superb. Well done Adam.

It's almost like we buy players on potential to develop - rather than buying the finished articles. Who knew :)

Or that the step up from the championship to the Premier League takes more time for defenders to adjust than most others. Imagine going from facing strikers like Scott Sinclair and Lewis Grabban, to facing Aguero, Salah, Rashford etc

I think Webster certainly was worthy of critique in his early days as he did make mistakes but this thread title and OP was waaaaaaay overboard.

Probably working!
Following on from the Solly March edition of this question, I have been moved to add my own version.
This isn't about bedwetting. I just don't see what he brings to the team.
His passing is erratic.
Frankly he is no better than Duffy bringing the ball out.
He rarely wins a decisive header from defence.
He rarely wins a directed header in attack.
His tackles are often erratic and don't cleanly win the ball.
His long balls upfield rarely hit a Brighton player.
His positioning is dreadful in defence, rarely near a dangerous attacker.
Occasional tendency to dangle a leg indecisively near the ball to deflect it to no man's land.

I concede I don't like what he brings to the team, in fact I don't know what that is. For me, he is what Stephens or Barnes were to their detractors.
The BBC ranked his performance bottom apart from the subs against Saints which is where I place him most matches.
But interested to hear what others think.

Do you see what he brings to the team yet?
Can you at least admit that he is actually a defender?

I think that’s a fair compromise, could the OP at least change the thread title to:

“Adam Webster, Defender - Discuss”

I guess G.Pot's response to critiques of BDB can equally apply to this particular poster's opinion.

How about changing this pathetic title now?

Is this what we want to be the main thread title for Adam’s career at Brighton?

Nah. Only the OP should be able to make that decision. Otherwise your just censoring someone elses opinion, which is their right to have tbf.

I have a request to you the good people of NSC.

There's another perfectly good Webster thread.

Don't post anything on this one. It's a loads of toxic s***

I'll go and bounce the other one to the top of the board.

Start posting on that. No more on this one. Let it sink to where it deserves to be

Webster had 2 weaknesses when he joined the club, passing the ball directly to the opposing team and going on runs only to be caught in possession and dangerously out of position. Both of those have now been eradicated. At present he is our best defender.

Given Webster’s form this season I like to think the thread title is ironic. When he gets his first England call up the title will warrant a further raising of at least one eyebrow and some general merriment

Nah. It's a nice reminder to people that you might like a bit of a tit if you start negative threads about our own players.

Thank you. The thread title was a tongue in cheek reflection on the dreadful thread about Solly March with the same title, so I used the same title to reflect that tounge in cheek, because of course Webster is a defender and a decent one at that. That was my point. Changing the main thread title would leave a thread under my name with a totally different meaning. It was a discussion thread, raising why I wasn't confident in him in early December and inviting debate, not intending to slam the player. Unfortunately, the replies instantly took it in a different direction before a few brave souls actually agreed that he could worry a fan with some of his choices. He is a different player now, and it's ridiculous to suggest that he hasn't improved immeasurably since then. It's facile to keep returning to the December thread and measuring the content then against his current performances now when he is clearly now playing the best football of his life. There is no comparison to just a few weeks ago when he had a mistake/error of judgement in him, to today when he is not getting in those situations anymore.

Seriously, what is this constant need you have to airbrush things that don't fit your narrative? Just leave things as they are. It reflects a poster's view at the time and others have the opportunity to go on and agree, make counter points or talk about hard creatures.

This is and has always been a message board that represents all strains of fans opinions, not just yours. If you want to start up VagabondPravda.com feel free I guess but in the meantime just let the debate flow - even if it doesn't fit your particular world view.

You can't change the thread title now.
Not least because the last 20 posts will make no sense.

(Well less sense than they should, I accept this is NSC and the bar for making sense is low)
