[Albion] Why Are We So Wasteful?

I can't believe Premier League players need to be coached how to shoot. Shooting is just as much about mentality and belief as it is skill. Personally I think they're lacking a bit of belief and confidence in shooting.

Agreed, something a good pyschological couch could help with maybe?

You can't blame Potter for it.

Yes and no, the problem as many including myself have seen is that based on what we have seen on the pitch is that our shots have all the same characteristics. There has been absolutely no improvement in finishing etc. This, and I am purely speculating here; does suggest that training doesn't focus in on being clinical. That could be down to training program and purely by choice.

OR, and I suspect is a bigger issue, we do not have an adequate coach in finishing. In which case, this would be my priority.

Nonetheless, the problem has always been our forwards choose to shoot at the keeper rather than try to get a shot around him; which has been an issue for the last 2 seasons, not unique to this one. I think it's more apparent this season as we've created so many chances compared to last.

On the subject of practice, Lineker, Shearer and Wright used to practice shooting/finishing every day in training without a goalkeeper to increase confidence. They weren't too shabby. I wonder if our lot do that?

They might miss, which wouldn’t do much for their confidence.

Doesn’t everyone?

Yes. I was stupidly asked did I watch training . Like this was possible in the middle of a pandemic!

And Joelinton £40 million!!!

So your argument is because other clubs have made mistakes with striker signings, we should never sign anyone!? [emoji1782]

I don't think anyone does expect that, but equally we wouldn't mind an improvement on Richard Tiltman, Mark Farrington and Kevin Bremner, which currently we have, but only just.

Kevin Bremner was a good player and a key member of a promotion team. Just ask Garry Nelson. All those headers he got from corners to the near post ...

Now I realise that you can do anything with statistics, but I thought it was interesting to see the average minutes some* of Neal Maupay's contemporaries were taking to score a goal this season.

Mins Played/Player/Goals Scored/Ave Min Per Goal

1222 Maupay 7 - 174 mins per goal scored
1431 Zaha 8 - 178
1510 Wilson 8 - 188
1530 Watkins 7 - 218
1540 Rashford 7 - 220
1512 Mane 6 -252
1474 Bowen 5 - 294
1516 Aubameyang 5 - 303
1397 Werner 4 - 349
1535 Wood 3 - 511

*Kane/Salah/Vardy/Calvert-Lewin/Bamford have a better scoring rate than Maupay.
But if I had included them my list wouldn't look so good. (if politicians can do it, so can I)

Maybe just limit the list to players outside the big boys. Looks like Maupay is doing well. TBH he needs a target man alongside him

That is so simplistic. A decent target man comes with no guarantees. So many examples of bug money strikers not fulfilling their 'guarantees'.

And other examples that work

Absolutely, he was. Did allot of work and worked well with The Goldstone Gaz. But clinical finisher he wasn't. Like Maupay you wouldn't be entirely surprised if he missed a sitter. I know I'm coming over as I don't mean to. I don't think Maupay is too bad, he's a good player, but his finishing just doesn't cut it and he should have scored many more goals with the chances that this midfield has created. I then just think they have to face it and see what they can do about it. I'm really surprised many think it's ok. There you go, you pays your money you takes your choice.

Haller, Samatta, Werner, Brewster and Rodrigo all very recent examples of players in the bracket that you are talking about or more who have done **** all. Watkins, (who wanted Villa anyway because of the Dean Smith connection), is the only name you seem to have come up with. Wilson is on £100k a week, way beyond our wage structure.

Who are these realistic examples who’ve worked? Who have we missed out on or who should we go get?

Whatever a decent target man costs. Sell White, Biss or Tariq if we have to.

What if the problem is wages and not transfer fee? Not as simple as you make.

And selling White, Biss, or Tariq would be stupid unless a really good reason.

Well if you’re going to criticise someone’s post with a glib “they’re exactly wrong” you may do your argument some favours by giving some reasons as to why?

I thought Swanny made a good point. Happy to hear what yours is.

Plus entirely counter productive to the clubs plan to develop their own young talent or acquire it and keep it.
