Very unusual for any British player to have any release clause.

Also with regard Chelsea sell on fee. Tariq was coming to the end of his contract and wasn’t getting game time so I doubt it was very high at all. He could have walked on a tribunal fee not long after which would have been pretty low considering he’d never started a match.

If Lamptey has a release clause of just £25m, I will go out on a limb that there’ll be a ton of clubs making £25m bids in coming weeks.

He may or may not have a release clause, but no chance Tony would agree to a cut price one. Wouldn’t make business sense.

You’re probably right, could we find a situation where everyone is interested and then a bidding war begins?

If he keeps his level up I don’t think it’ll be long anyway until a serious bid is made that can’t be refused. £50m? I think that’d be hard to refuse for Tony. And fair value (as crazy as that is I know!)

But if he does go, it means he’s performed amazing for us, so win win.

One thing that is certain is that nobody outside the club knows how much he'll be paid, whether there is a release clause (or how much) and whether Chelsea have a sell on clause (and how much). Fact.

Top work by the club and well done young man :clap2:

His agent will know, and therefore any interested club will know when they ask the agent.

Brilliant news. Not overly concerned about his hammies at this stage - at his age he's still developing so there will be issues, especially at the pace he runs at and the hacking he suffers

If the rumours are to be believed you can see why Manchester City scuppered the Albion's chances of singing Nunez.

If he'd put away half the chances that would have come his way, this season.
He too would now have a massive contract extension, making him seriously expensive for fellow Premier League sides.

Indeed. But it's unlikely he'll tip NSC the wink.

Hope he can avoid the Michael Owen type career, who also burst onto the scene at a young age with tremendous pace, but suffered badly from hamstring problems. So much so that although he was still effective as a striker in his late 20's he didn't have much by pace then.

You’re probably right, could we find a situation where everyone is interested and then a bidding war begins?

That isn't how minimum release clauses work. There would be no bidding war so the club would set the release value high to protect themselves from losing the player cheaply. Once another club meet the minimum release clause then they are allowed to speak to the player even if we didn't want to sell, it would then be up to the player to agree personal terms and the move happens. If other clubs were interested they'd only have to match the minimum release clause to also speak to the player, and the agent would make sure the minimum release clause was known to all interested parties. The power would be in the player/agents hands as they know we have to accept the bid if they agree personal terms so they can play any clubs they are speaking to against each other to maximise the personal terms. Once the player has decided which club he wants to join then the transfer happens, we would be unable to negotiate a higher transfer fee.

A higher minimum release clause doesn't price a player out of a move, we could still accept an offer lower than the clause if the relationship with the player soured and he wanted a move, or another manager came in and didn't rate the player as highly so he found himself benched. We may even specify that the minimum release clause only applies to certain clubs (Swansea had this clause in Joe Allen's contract that the minimum release clause was only triggered if the offer was from 5 certain clubs, Liverpool were one of those clubs)

A high minimum release clause wouldn't price a player out of a move. It is just the price at which a club have to tell the player about the offer and give that player a chance to speak to the other club. It would be stupid of the club to set low and is in the clubs best interests to set it higher, it doesn't mean we wouldn't accept less than the minimum release value either. We'd be stupid to set it at something like £25 million as any club would match that for a player of Lamptey's ability, it then comes down to what the other club is willing to offer in personal terms etc.

Complicated, isn't it? Do you think we'll offer him a car?

No release clause according to reports.

Amazing how our young players have faith in the manager and club, and yet some of our armchair supporters......

Anyone would think Bill Archer was still at the helm, and Liz Costa and the official supporters' club looking alarmed at the discontent.....

Maybe I'm just a licker after all.....

From David Ornstein in The Athletic (18/1/21):

Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City unlikely to be put off by Lamptey’s new deal
Tariq Lamptey’s impressive rise has been rewarded with a new long-term contract at Brighton but it is unlikely to discourage the clubs who were keen on recruiting him.
Despite only joining from Chelsea 12 months ago, the right-back recently agreed a fresh four-and-a-half-year deal worth £40,000 per week and signed the paperwork last Friday.
That ended any chance of Lamptey departing the Amex Stadium this month, although his suitors were all aware of the situation and so this development would not have taken them by surprise.
Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City are among the 20-year-old’s domestic admirers and he was heavily linked with Bayern Munich last summer, although no bids are thought to have been made.
Brighton, who announced Lamptey’s new deal on Sunday, tend not to stand in the way of players seeking to move elsewhere if a suitable offer arrives. It is expected their asking price for Lamptey — an England Under-21 international who also qualifies to represent Ghana — will be similar under the improved terms as it was previously.

How are they providing evidence for this?

We haven't sold a promising young player from our first team for years
