Seems a pretty pointless list tbh.

Not sure why anyone would rate Wilder/Smith/Potter any differently.
They have identical premier league experience, and over the 2 seasons, probably pretty similar records.

Does Smith get ahead of Potter because he has a much bigger budget?
Or is it because he has Grealish is his ranks?
Or do 90 minutes think Smith has been responsible for tactics and substitutions which have changed game outcomes more than Potter has?

Potter's success was in Sweden and is difficult to properly evaluate. Both Smith and Wilder took poor teams, massively improved them and got them promoted. Wilder did incredibly well last year, Smith also did well at Brentford. With Potter at Swansea and Albion you couldn't definitely say he's improved either team in results

I'm really not quite sure what Steven Gerrard is doing on that list, especially when you consider Chris Hughton and Eddie Howe are both omitted.

Gerrard has only managed for one and a half seasons and hasn't (yet) even won a trophy. Obviously he will this season, but one trophy for an Old Firm club (that was admittedly in need of an overhaul) is basically about par.

Potter makes it very clear he is a coach. Can only compare him to similar clubs. I do think he tries to be too clever with selections and do wonder about his managerial skills. Interesting what players think of so many changes taking place and so many played out of position. Personally prefer Dyche method Having total belief in 14/15 players and making the odd change.

The Dyche method has it’s negatives too; their form totally collapses with any injuries. They rely on world-class organisation and defending which generally works; relying on taking one of the few chances they create is a gamble, especially when they have players like Barnes out.

In addition, his negative percentage football is just awful to watch. The media love Dyche and it’s often been said that he would be a success at any top club. I think that is utter BS because the man clearly (like Big Sam) specialises in a certain style, I can’t think of any top club that would adopt this (other than Spurs as they are already half way there with Mourinho).

That list is utter bollox

1. Dean Smith is massive recency bias. He's a very lucky boy to still have a job, lucky to have been promoted, lucky to have stayed up and then lucky to have players that are better than Villas standard sign for them as they have deep pockets. Out of all the managers in the PL, he's the one I'd least like to pitch up at ours. Strikes me as clueless.
2. Steve Bruce is above us with a worse squad and some long COVID issues and did no worse than Benitez last year despite a hostile crowd. Under rated.
3. Gerrard is unproven. Finishing first or 2nd in a 2 horse race is neither here nor there. He may well be a good manager in the making but any ranking is a total guess up. Admittedly, this is all a guess up, myself included.
4. What Dyche achieves with that Burnley squad year on year is witchcraft. That said, I can't say I'd want him here and can't imagine which other PL team would.
5. I genuinely have no idea where Potter goes. I thought he was as brilliant this time last year and destined for a top 6 club as I find him infuriating, over complicating things and ignoring defending properly this year. If we want to rank team passing sideways and giving away cheap goals, he is right up there.
6. No Fat Frank, Smug Eddie, Chris Hughton but Mark Robins on the list. Ok mate.

Impossible to answer. There are too many moving parts and too much that goes on behind closed doors. Also impossible to know whether a successful manager at one club can transplant that success elsewhere. As fans we can only judge basis a combination of results and performance ie outcomes. What we don’t see is the constraints (or lack of). I am always amazed by the posters on here who are utterly convinced that Potter should be in or should be out. None of us knows for sure. A fan can have an instinct about the subject but with nowhere near enough conviction to be able to ridicule the opposing view or rank alongside other managers.

Yes ,Graham Potter is the best English manager.
As I said in another thread,if potter went to city he would win the league,if Guardiola came here we would still be in a similar league position.
How would dyche,hodgson,Howe,Bruce, wilder,lampard etc do if they were given the city job?

That's a stretch. Burnley's form collapsed early season when both Mee and Tarkowski were out and Long and Dunne had to replace them. Either might make a competent reserve, but both together are not adequate.

I'd put John Coleman in the top ten. If you think Dyche works wonders on a limited budget, then what Accrington Stanley are doing is even more remarkable. They had the second lowest budget in League Two when they won that division; I doubt it's gone up much since, and if League One was decided on points-per-game, they'd be top of that now.

It depends whether you base it on previous achievements or if you base it on current ability. Previous achievements is easy because it is a matter of record. Current ability is less easy to define as it is based on what is achieved in the future.

Depends what we are voting for, getting results or style of play. Style of football probably top 5, using nous to grind out results a la hodgson and dyche probably below top 10. If he could combine the 2 he would be number 1 and we would be top 10. I can see how close we are, but I am still baffled by some of his decisions

Best in the country by far: unique, inventive, fascinating. The managerial equivalent of the Velvet Underground: not appreciated enough at the moment but will become one of the most influentual figures in the world of football. Although, sadly, he may have to leave us to do it, since absolutely top-class players are essential to his style and it is a huge ask getting the squad to the level he needs. But I absolutely love watching him try!
I can understand the frustration if all you care about is results at any price. There is a strange dichotomy here though, on NSC and in the fanbase in general. I was happy with that in the Hughton years. For the first two or three seasons I just wanted us to stay up and didn't really care how it was done: Hughton's survival style was perfect for a club trying to establish itself. But so many people, including on here, complained about the 'negative football'! I stuck up for Hughton and was gutted when he was sacked, but even my patience was tested by the 0-0 Wolves/0-1 Spurs consecutive games

Potter was brought in in response to that. He has a very clear vision, we are getting all the compliments in the world for our football style and I am very proud to be an Albion fan at the moment. I firmly believe that the beauty and creativity of our football will glean enough points to keep us up. I don't see the logic in being fed up with negative football and ALSO fed up with flowing, beautiful football when you hit the post a lot and get perfectly good winning goals ruled out for non-existent infractions. The margins are so narrow!

I am happier with the team, manager and style now than any any point in my 58 years watching the Albion. We are putting up a wonderful performance in a league which, the Leicester freak aside, is basically a corporate procession dictated by plutocracy. If by any mishap we did get relegated I would very much enjoy winning loads of games as Potter brought us back up again. I hope the club doesn't panic and sticks with his five year plan.
