So, Sturgeon and Drakeford, acting on the same scientific advice, have also seen awful CV19 waves, have locked down, eased, set restrictions, eased, set harsher restrictions.
Lacking the Tory attributes and alleged corruption you despise, why have they equally failed?
Because that doesn't fit his agenda, obviously - it confounds all his stereotypes.

One’s a woman and the other is a Taff. Was never going to work out.

What stereotype? I attributed a varied set of individual characteristics to one particular person. The very opposite of stereotyping.

As for QED.. don’t take it so seriously. It was a quip.

Only last week Boris was accusing the leader of the opposition of wanting to cancel Christmas and yet for millions today he did just that.

I think he has done the right thing, but for political and personal advantage he has attempted to destroy others who suggested the same.

The sooner what's left of the sensible conservative party dumps him the better.

I suspect he's one of them.

Stay safe, and I send you my best wishes. After vaccination your lives will change. Let's hope it is soon and not cocked up by this, the worst of all governments.

No I'm not one of them. I just believe that maybe we have to live with this virus. I don't give a **** about Christmas, In fact I would much rather work through it. Everyone goes on about people catching Covid and dying with it, but people are dying with the consequences of Covid as well.

I am doing what I can to stop the spread of this virus, unfortunately I have to work on, I have managed to change my shift pattern to tramping instead of day work, this was to protect my vulnerable wife and daughter. The problem is keep locking down the economy then opening it up again 4 to 6 weeks later, only to then close it down again will cause more problems. This is my own opinion, some agree with me others dont, but just because some of us feel this way we are called selfish and idiots or conspiracy theorists.
What doesn't help is the government during the first lockdown maybe could of handled it a bit better. Define what business is classed as essential, my company are signed up with the government and NHS as essential service provider, they provide us with certificates and ID passes as proof.

Anyway I hope this is the beginning of the end of Covid, I also hope many lives are saved. Whatever happens stay safe all.

Indeed.

As I said in the summer we should have protected the vulnerable and let everyone else go back to work. It could have been easily managed. I would happily have stayed in a room upstairs.

But...no.

I am interested in the spike in Germany. They are very hygienic...what's gone wrong?

Protect the vulnerable, lovely soundbite but wtf does it actually mean and what are the practicalities?

Firstly, who are the vulnerable? Is that everyone over 90, over 80 or over 70? What underlying health conditions to you heap into this category? There are plenty of people recovering from cancer that might fall into this category, or diabetics who, covid aside, would be living and working a normal life. Say we do round up all those vulnerable groups, who's going to look after them and are we going to isolate them as well.

Last but not least, then let's have a massive tax increase for all those that are working to pay for the vulnerable being 'shielded'.

I saw an excellent interview with Peter Hitchens who raised some good points. Do we actually have any proof that a lockdown is working?

We have had lockdowns now. So for whatever reason clearly that didn’t work did it?

I was pro lockdown at the start, and very aggrieved at those flouting the rules. But I would like to see more evidence that a lockdown is what we need to resolve this. If covid is mainly effecting over 75’s, why does that require the entire country to lockdown? To save lives? Well if we stopped car travel that would also save lives.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but I’m feeling quite contemplative about the governments actions right now.

I don't think they have equally failed, to be fair. Scotland and Wales planned a more Draconian Xmas lockdown well before 19th Dec, which has enabled their people to plan for it in advance.

The people who live either side of me are both upset because they can no longer go up north to drop off presents for Xmas. Had they known a u turn was around the corner, they'd have planned to deliver/swap presents much earlier. As it is, their kids won't have half of their presents to open on Christmas day. Logistical arrangements are the biggest shambles here I think. So avoidable if Johnson had heeded the expert advice nearly two weeks ago as Keir Starker advised him to.

Sturgeon - 6 hours ago she reduced their Christmas freedoms from 5 days, to just Christmas Day.

Drakeford - presided over the two week circuit breaker in October. On NSC and in the anti Tory media this was portrayed as a game changer “why can’t we have one”. Now Wales is the CV19 capital of the UK.

The continent - I follow this, infighting in many nations, anger against Macron, anger at Germany influencing Austria for example.

My overriding point is that this pandemic has been a nightmare for everyone one of these governments, for the leaders and scientists. Look beyond England and it’s pretty much similar in the UK home nations and beyond, a constant yo-yo of decisions made, reversed, regretted, recriminations.

He's been a tool, yes. But that doesn't excuse your shit post.
Lots of alcohol fuelled faux outrage on NSC tonight. Anyone going around continously claiming they are an underappreciated "key worker' deserves a bit of teasing.

Meaningless phrase anyway, everyone working and paying taxes is a 'key worker' considering the state of the nations bank balance. Front line NHS staff deserve a bit more credit obviously but I doubt many of them are as Needy as Clampy.

Lockdown did work. It stopped the NHS from being overwhelmed, it stemmed the spread of the virus, it saved millions of lives.
If we hadn’t had it, well, I dread to think. If anything it should have been stricter.
Going back to a virtually restriction free lifestyle with people being encouraged to eat out to help out, gyms reopening, propel cramming back onto public transport, gathering in large groups etc etc is why we now need another lockdown.

I’d recommend doing a bit of background on Peter Hitchens. He’s quite an unpleasant, right wing, snob.
His late Brother, Christopher got most of the sensible genes.

So, let's just confine all over 75s to their rooms, never let them out again, and let the healthy younger population breathe all over each other until herd immunity (with a few thousand deaths; oh dear, how sad) and keep it that way until what? The disease miraculously goes away, or all the oldie die.
Maybe the upcoming generation of new 75 year olds will be happy to oblige too?

Didn’t you say on another thread you didn't really have to work anymore if you chose not to???

Until I retire I am subject to my leaders. You think I should retire to avoid death? Well I could...but I still have somethin to give  What would you do?

It’s neither the time nor place to vent personal grudges. Please save this kind of thing for the bear pit. If you really feel you have to share your feelings on the matter.

I’ve heard that argument before.

The best evidence is that the March to June lockdowns across Europe worked. Thousands dying a day, became very low numbers. Overwhelmed hospitals in Italy and Spain, piles of coffins, not old ICU staff dying of CV19 .... all eventually eased.

I benefitted from that strategy and diligence, by a getting a cancer follow up internal test once the chaos had subsided. The Royal Sussex unit free again to work on bowel cases.

Goodness knows what the Royal Sussex would’ve looked like, if the upwards curve had never been stemmed.

Finally, how many 10,000’s more elderly or risk group people like my Dad, would’ve been killed without a lockdown?

When this has gone away, the UK, WHO and sensible nations will hopefully get together and see what worked, what didn’t, and how best to protect livelihoods next time.

Until that time, lockdowns save liives.

Absolutely right - the only 'thing' that knows what's going on, and what to do next is this f***in' virus. Governments - ALL of them - haven't got a chance of out-guessing it. Some - through sheer luck - will do marginally better than others. The notion that this pandemic would have been so much less devastating had people voted the way some of the critics on here wanted them to is about as fatuous as beiieving the earth is flat or the moon is made of green cheese.

Some people really need to get a grip!

But the science presented must be brand new, that’s why are all the governments acting today.

Sturgeon hadn’t cancelled Christmas when Starmer and Johnson were politicking mid week. But she has tonight.

You may not be a Corbyn fan, but you certainly have an absolute hatred of Boris, of Brexit, and of anybody who went against your wishes and voted to leave the EU - but that last statement takes the absolute irrational biscuit!
Corbyn would have done better? There are (apparently) people who believe in unicorns on NSC (check out the posts of one of your Brexit hating chums), but even if that was the case it would be a more plausible idea than 'Corbyn couldn't have done any worse'.

He could!
