This run produces over 20cm of likely heavy wet snow across parts of the high ground in the SE, with 10cm even on some lower levels. If this model run plays out then there is the risk of significant disruption across the SE of England on Friday.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Dan Harris said: "It’ll remain cold and unsettled on Friday as low pressure brings strong winds and spells of rain to many parts of the UK."

"We’ve issued a snow warning for southern and eastern Scotland, with snow expected across hills and possibly to lower levels, before turning to persistent rain. We’re keeping an eye on other areas where there is potential for disruptive snow - in particular central and south-east England and the hills of northern England – however confidence at this stage is low with details only becoming clearer at short notice.”

I've not seen them myself but some talk on Twitter that this morning's model run has rowed this back quite considerably?

It was never likely, and yes, it's more a Scotland / N England event

Not too disappointed, as the majority of any snow we get - increasingly rare, I know, as winters overall are getting milder - is in January and February. And the 'Beast from the East' a couple of years ago was actually right at the start of March.

The best scenario would be a strong anti-cyclone over Scandinavia feeding in bitterly cold easterlies, and low pressure or weather fronts lurking just to the south of the Channel. I that happens, it'll be game-on for some decent snowfall, but this has usually been sometime after Christmas, as January and February are normally the two coldest months of the year.
