The West Wing is now on 4OD, you now have no excuse to not watch series 1-4.

I made my wife watch it a year or so ago as it’s the best show ever on TV, IMO. When they were setting up stuff this week in the hospital in case something happened to the president last night she and the two other residents who love the show kept screaming “blue! Blue! Blue!” To each other. (From the episode where Bartlett is shot)

The only thing I’ll defend is cricket is way more confusing to an outsider than you realize. I thought my knowledge of the ashes was much more impressive than I was given credit for even though it might be simple once a concept is understood.

I don't think cricket is that hard if you have a knowledge of baseball: that alone will give the notion of runs and being caught and run out. There's no baseball equivalent of being bowled it's true (and consequently no lbw) but I'd have thought they'd be easy enough to work out. There's probably more a psychological barrier about seeing a batter stay in for over after over (an over is six balls, if you haven't worked that out).

One thing that did strike me as odd was the description of Philip Hughes' death as "an asshole not wearing the right equipment". I'm not sure where you got that from but Hughes was pretty widely liked and his death caused great grief throughout the cricketing world (there are few Aussies around whose death wouldn't be so mourned!). He was wearing the correct kit - at the time. His death revealed a flaw in the design.

There are some odd terms in cricket though. When he understand a sentence like "He was facing a leftie on a bunsen and he thought it was a Chinaman so he played back, but it went on with the arm and he padded up: he was plumb and back in the hatch for a quacker." and it all makes perfect sense, you know you're getting somewhere :)

I've spent the last 5 seasons sitting watching the game for hours and hours around the country, and still dont understand a damn thing bar the basics you mentioned at the top!

Frankie broke it down for me early on though, simply saying..."See ball, hit ball"! Thats all I need to know :D

Thanks. I think the language is something that confuses me even though I thought I was getting it watching “how to” videos on YouTube. I couldn’t remember the word “bowler” last night so I said pitcher. I think the test matches vs other kinds of matches has also confused me. I thought from watching the how to stuff that a match was basically where each team got an inning to bat and then I read a thread that talked about multiple innings. The record runs from an England cricketer I referenced (334) I think I got from Richard Osmonds House or Games.

I do now regret referring to the guy that died as possibly an asshole. I thought I remembered him being discussed in a thread on here because talked a lot of trash to opposing players (I can’t remember the cricket word for that) and there was proper safety equipment available that he chose not to wear. It was also in a thread where people were talking about getting in arguments with aussies at the england ashes match due to their bowler being very aggressive the previous year - which then had me google the highlights and see that hurling the ball towards a batsmen isn’t uncommon in the aggressive games. I probably shouldn’t have said the asshole comment because that’s horrible if I’m wrong. I think I’ve combined stories which made me reference him with another Australian player that isn’t liked. Maybe the guy that cheated?

My plan is to get a 4k OLED TV as soon as cashflow permits, then watch the long lost of boxsets you've got lined up for me. To watch in all their glory. Not forgotten about The Sopranos.

We loved House of Cards with (cough) Kevin Spacey.

Not sure watching a series filmed in SD will bring out the best in a 4K TV TBH. But the West Wing is an absolute must watch. I have watched all the way through twice now as well as watching episodes as and when they are on and I am browsing the channels. Supposed to be very real to life in a lot of the process parts given the number of experts involved in it. You would have said it was obviously exaggerated for dramatic effect but most of it is tame bearing in mind the circus in real life now.

I think the test matches vs other kinds of matches has also confused me. I thought from watching the how to stuff that a match was basically where each team got an inning to bat and then I read a thread that talked about multiple innings.

A test match is a five-day international match between two of the test-playing nations (England, Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland and Afghanistan - the last two are very new).

There are basically two types of cricket: limited overs and limitless (when played professionally, called First Class, you'll often see it abbreviated FC on here). Limited overs means just that: each side gets one innings and it's a certain length (20 and 50 are the most common). In LO games there are only three results: a win for either side or a tie. In FC games, there are four: a win for either side , a tie or a draw (tie and draw are not the same: tie is when scores are equal, a draw means that no side has managed to win). This is important: for the team bowling last to win a game, it has to get all the wickets of the batting team, otherwise it's a draw.

In LO games, there's just one innings, in FC game, there are two. Most FC games last four days although you will see three occasionally.

The record runs from an England cricketer I referenced (334) I think I got from Richard Osmonds House or Games.

I'm not sure where that's from but it's not true. The highest test score by an England cricketer is 364 by Len Hutton in 1938. The highest FC score is 428 by Archie MacLaren in 1895 (the highest non-first class score by an Englishman is 628 by James Collins in a school match)

I do now regret referring to the guy that died as possibly an asshole. I thought I remembered him being discussed in a thread on here because talked a lot of trash to opposing players (I can’t remember the cricket word for that) and there was proper safety equipment available that he chose not to wear.

There are a lot of instances of Aussie cheating: you'll see Warner, Smith and Bancroft mentioned frequently. But the guy who was hit, Philip Hughes, didn't have any protection on the back of his neck and was struck there - at the time, helmets didn't have this, but they have now. By all accounts, Hughes was a nice guy and generally well liked ... for an Aussie

Bradman's top test score was 334 - I suspect that what Music City Gull has seen. Wasn't there another Aussie who got to 334 and they declared so that Bradman's score wasn't bettered. Now explain declaring to him!

Our Panasonic flat screen has had a good run for its money, it must be ten or more years old. Naturally over time the picture quality had deteriorated so we’re going change and upgrade it anyway. NOT for The West Wing or The Sopranos, but a TV with a decent picture in SD or HD will be make all viewing more enjoyable.

Ah, he was talking about an Englishman's score. Yes, 334 was Bradman's top test score and Mark Taylor declared when he was level with it.

David Warner and Matthew Hayden have both gone past it since, however,

Fake news. If you can’t tell the difference between an Aussie and an American you need to experience more of the world. Who on earth thinks they wish to be British? Read some history and watch an Ashes Series.

He's right in some ways.

US culture has moved way past anything UK in Australia. Been the dominant foreign culture since the 90's.

Look at the youth and their music, fashion and trends are mostly from the US.

There are more basketball participants in Australia than there are cricket by a few hundred thousand people. In fact it's the second highest team participation sport in the country.

Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, all far more recognisable and iconic here than any English cricketer.

One thing that no-one has explained to me (and I've read several news outlets) is the significance of Hunter Biden's business dealings. Let's put aside the debate as to whether there's any truth in the stories or not and assume they are: these are not Joe Biden's emails.

Lots of politicians have relatives who are embarrassment - Trump's got a whole tribe of them. But I also recall Jimmy Carter's drunken brother, John Major's equally embarrassing brother, Thatcher's son (whose misadventures are too numerous to relate) and Ronald Reagan's daughter nude model, anti-nuclear activist daughter - I'm sure there are many more. But none of their misdeeds or opinions reflected on the politician, why should Biden be any different? I've not seen any publication explain this

The difference is in the Biden's case his family seems to have gotten very rich through being connected to him over many years.

All those other people you named don't appear to have ended up very wealthy through their associations to high ranking leaders.

It's not just Hunter though, Joe's brother James has long been into it as well.

The pattern is other Biden's make a lot of money, Joe denies any knowledge or part in it.

In the meantime, Paradigm Global Advisors fared poorly and shut down in 2010. James Biden quickly found new work, joining a construction firm in November 2010. In June 2011, while Joe Biden was overseeing Iraq policy, the firm won a $1.5 billion contract building homes in Iraq.

Not quite sure that was the scenario.

Taylor reached 334 near stumps on the second day and had an opportunity in the last over but couldn't get the ball away. Australia subsequently declared overnight. It wouldn't have been right to go out on the third morning just to try and pass it. He later said so himself.

Someone needs to tell him the next presidency starts in 2021. If Trump gets a covid-19 vaccine by the end of 2020 he won't be able to do it in his second term.

I have no idea why 'defend American Values' is at the bottom.

That should be first with nothing underneath it.

All those other people you named don't appear to have ended up very wealthy through their associations to high ranking leaders.

Really?

From Wikipedia
"During the mid to late 1980s, concerns were frequently expressed about possible conflicts of interest between Thatcher's business interests and his mother's political visits. In 1984 his mother faced questions in the House of Commons about his involvement in representing the bid of Cementation, a British company and a subsidiary of Trafalgar House, to build a university in Oman at a time when the prime minister was urging Omanis to buy British.[6]

Sir Bernard Ingham, the Prime Minister's press secretary, suggested that he could best help the government win the 1987 general election by leaving the country.[11] Margaret Thatcher's biographer, David Cannadine, stated that Mark Thatcher "traded shamelessly on his mother's name" and that he "continued to attract controversy and investigation from the tax authorities", much to his mother's embarrassment.

In 2003, following the death of his father, he was allowed to use the title of 'Sir' due to his inheritance of the Thatcher baronetcy a year before he was arrested in South Africa in connection with the 2004 Equatorial Guinea coup d'état attempt. He pleaded guilty to breaking anti-mercenary legislation in January 2005.[15] At this time the Sunday Times suggested that he had personal assets of £60 million, most of which was in offshore accounts.[6]"
