Michael Caine as a lecturer, falling off the stage in ‘Educating Rita’.... “assonance means getting the rhyme wrong...”

Oliver Reed

Was it on Wogan?

I think it was Wogan but I remember him in an even worse state when he appeared on the word with mark lamarr.he appeared on stage bare chested and we'll hammered.then lamarr surprised him with the announcement that they had been filming him secretly in his dressing room.needless to say Oliver reed was not impressed,i honestly feared for mark lamarrs safety.but the whole thing was quite embarrassing and cringey due to lamarr just mocking reed for his drinking and reed getting more and more annoyed.but it's definitely the drunkest state I have ever seen anyone on TV.

I remember Steve McFadden winning an award for his role as Phil Mitchell in EastEnders when he was going through his alcoholic phase.i saw an interview with him where they asked how he managed to act so drunk and he replied that drunks are always trying to act sober so he was trying really hard to act sober and the result is he looks drunk.it was an Interesting insight into method acting but also probably the most realistic drunk acting I have seen.

Was going to post the same, although I think the dialogue at this point was "I'm making time" and, to think, Richard E Grant is teetotal, and was back then.

Nope. Definitely not “making time”, as Withnail is driving at that point.

This bit is “Scrubberrrrrrrrrs!”

And on another note, probably overacted but still funny...

Apologies for taking thread in a darker direction but when it comes to greatest drunk acting is has to be Nicholas Cage in ' Leaving Las Vegas '. Such a powerful performance and my god every time I've watched it, it puts me off booze. The irony being that I'm hardly the world's biggest drinker. Fancy sailing through dry January? Watch this late December and it will be a doddle!

ET and RB may have been drawing on some personal experiences when they made this:

He'd be my shout too and apparently he was a teetotaller.

I never knew that, that's quite amazing. So many fantastic characters in that show that it's hard to pick a favourite. My all time favourite comedy and they want to keep on making it apparently and become a Canadian 'Coronation Street'. I really hope they do.

Stephen Graham's performance in "the virtues" is the most realistic and harrowing depiction of someone drunk. Incredibly uncomfortable viewing in parts.
