Very nice I’ve not heard a decent Rega. I bought the Linn through Monkey Music in Baker Street about 7 years ago. It was a bit of a bargain at £500. I wanted to go vintage. At the time I too had a Project turntable which was very good and a good start to serious record players. The Linn did need a lot of setting up and placing properly, I’ve learnt by trail and error. Trouble is you can keep being tempted to update them and being prone to gadgets its very tempting. Mine only plays 33rpm, and I would like to update to the Lingo but that is best part of £1500.
It’s all a bit addictive, but great fun. Best bit of kit I’ve bought to improve the sound of my (and the wife’s records) is a Project record cleaner. You can special order through Richer Sounds.

Monkey music is sorely missed.

Yep, already started on there a while back. Came to a halt though and I now just drip feed it when the mood takes me.

Don't rush it, It took me months to decide and this is what I eventually when with. If The shops allows you to demo the speakers in your house before you buy them that is a big bonus. I tried a pair that sounded amazing in the demo room but over powered the my room when I got them home. I think speakers are the hardest thing to buy because they can be affected so much buy placement, the main thing is that they sound good to you and your preferences.

I have connected the Rega Turntable to a Rega MC phono stage then to Rega Elicit-R and have B&W 705 S2 Speakers.

Our table is not a HiFi table, so in order to put the phono pre Amp and the turntable power supply, my husband put some L brackets underneath it and use an Asda chopping board as a shelf. I can never see me changing anything now unless something breaks.

Does having the system set up that close to the radiator cause a problem?

I've always set my systems up well away from any source of heat.

I have had a system of some sorts there since we move there 14 years ago, so far I have had no issues.

Let's be honest, I'm just jealous. I had to downsize out any proper vinyl playing equipment when we downsized. All my CDs uploaded on to my Cocktail through a couple of smaller Tannoys. But I kept all my albums and singles from my first 45 at the end of the 50's to to last when CDs took over. I just have a style over substance record player now, but one day...... and that record cleaner looks worth investigating too.

The only reason I got this was I because I was riding home from work on a cold January night lit up like a Christmas tree and still a motorcyclist pull out of a side road and side swiped me, taking the full impact on my left leg. I needed 6 months off work as my knee needed to be reconstructed a lot of pain and physio required so I could walk again. I was a member of British Cycling and they handled the legal stuff. two years after the accident I got some financial compensation and my husband said I should get something I would really like, after what I went through. This is what I chose. I feel extremely privileged to own it, but if I could swap it for a crosley cruiser and have my knee back to how it was, then I would do that in a flash.

Sorry that you had to get rid of you equipment, but a long as you have something to listen to your tunes it's all good.

Wow, that sounds like a serious accident. I would say your husband gave you good advice to buy something you might never have expected to own. I had a lesser accident that took 18m of physio and exercises before a trapped nerve worked free and I splashed all the compo on two Bob Dylan giclee prints which we have never regretted. I don't even specially like Bob Dylan's music, but I do like his artwork. I did have a second accident which gave me a few skeletal issues and, like you, I would give back the compo tomorrow to have everything working properly again.

Quite right too. Back on topic, I have no idea who they are, but those covers look like the part of the reason I still love vinyl. Colourful to look at and draw in the listener with hopefully something to read inside while you listen. Every album I own carries a memory. I love reading ths thread.

I saw Binkbeats live in Brighton last year. My first bit of vinyl from him though. As you say, lovely album covers! Very minimal sleeve notes though as they're EP's. All three parts of the...Private Matter Previously Unavailable...set.

Edit: Just cracked opened Part 2 and it's an absolutely gorgeous piece of plum coloured vinyl Looking forward to seeing what Part 3 will reveal now!

I am pleased you bought it back the topic, as I love seeing what other people have as hifi equipment, not so I can be smug or to criticise, but because I love it all from the old to new, cheap to expensive. Thanks. I agree, I love seeing what others have as hifi too. My trouble is I could spend hours on a thread just discussing hifi, hence why I said I should bring it back to vinyl for a bit

I might indulge though and post a pic of my turntable, as it's the vinyl thread, but also sneak in a pic of my Monitor Audio speakers that I still use after what must be well over 20 years of ownership, as they must surely count as 'vintage' by now! They're still going strong and I still love them.


Edit: Just opened part 3 of the Binkbeats set and it's coloured vinyl again...and best of all!....it's full on Albion Blue. Marvellous scenes!

Nice! I have not heard of that make I would imagine as it is direct drive and with pitch control it can be used as a DJ turntable. What type of cartridge is that?


Most of the time when I see direct drive turntables advertised it a Technics, or the cheaper Audio-technica LP-120. It’s good to see something different.

Yep. I am the same. My speakers cost me $100 from Facebook market place and up grade from ones I got from a second hand store when I moved to Australia. That purchase also included a silver NAD amp that needs a clean up but always sounded amazing. On my ever growing list of projects.

I don't have much spare cash to spend on my system but mine does the job nicely for what I need.

Yeah, they are dj turntables. I bought them as a pair years ago. I used to pair them with a Roksan Caspian power amp and a Citronic 7 channel mixer. Back then I used to do my own little mixes so had a cobbled together hybrid hifi set up if you like.

The power amp eventually gave up the ghost, so I sold it and the mixer and replaced with a Yamaha network amp (which also has a built in phono stage) and just use the one deck now. Very happy with the new set up as what I've lost in being able to mix, I've gained with the ability to now stream from various sources.

The cartridge is an Ortofon Night Club E.

I love twiddling with hi fi stuff, moving things around, finding a different sound . . . . I'm always amazed how different things sound in different rooms.

As for vinyl, I was scared off picture discs as a kid when I bought house of fun by madness, played dreadfully, eccentric grooves and warped . . . I took it back and got a proper black one with a picture sleeve

This nugget ( A&S records in Shoreham 1990 ) is cool though, and still plays well. . . .
