Well I think a lot of elderly including my own are thinking just that.

This. Had a lovely day out with the kids on the downs on Sunday under our new freedoms. Old buggers everywhere, many of whom seem to have spent their lives thinking a metre is actually a centimetre. It would seem many elderly either don't care or would rather have their freedom and take their chances with the virus.

This is starting to become a bit of a trope on NSC now but that's mainly because it's true.

Isn’t collective awareness, behaviour, testing, tracking and tracing all valid reasons why lockdown restrictions can be eased while continuing to reduce the R number, rather than just going herd 2.0?

I have much more faith in world medical science, and I'm quite disappointed in the pushing of the narrative that medical science will take years to find a solution.

The ongoing work into blood plasma treatments all look very promising. The research into the link between bad outcomes and vitamin D deficiency seems interesting.

That is now. In another month there will be other new breakthroughs, and so it will go on.

But yes, let's chuck the towel in and meekly wave the white flags.

Sadly, this Government is profoundly insular and that is reflected in the Scientific advice they ask for and choose to use.

The Oxford vaccine has performed poorly on Monkeys so I suspect that is what is fuelling this current doubt, remember, the Government were telling us we’re leading the World in finding a vaccine? Absolute bollox I’m afraid.

Good news is - the USA are having great results. Moderna has it’s first batch of test results from humans and it makes very happy reading.

It doesn't have to be this country that finds the vaccine. As long as someone does. Organisations and states, and the whole of science should be working together to find a solution. This is an issue for the whole of humanity and the search for a vaccine should reflect that rather than look like an attempt to improve national prestige.

absolutly, we should also not denigrate our contribution to this effort.

lets face it , if we ge a vaccine , there is no way this shambles in charge will be able to up scale that for everyone. Will be like the testing - which is still a sh1t show.

So yeah , Vaccine isnt an option for us with these clowns in charge

We'd probably sell it off

SARS doesn’t have a vaccine. The Last known case was in 2004 however it is almost certain that it is still around. We are living with SARS and also MERS.

There is little reason to believe that COVID-19 won’t behave in a similar way. I suspect that the virus will lose its potency as the year progresses and the need for the vaccine will reduce. Data out of Italy and Germany would indicate that this is the case.

A vaccine however is always preferable as there is always a question regards a 2nd wave, though normally this isn’t as bad as the first.

The reason for the lockdown wasn't to prevent people getting the virus but to prevent everyone getting it in late March / early April and swamping the NHS. The current lockdown being loosened doesn't mean we've beaten the virus, it means there's now a bed with your name on potentially waiting for you in the local ICU.

There is clearly a balance to be struck, however we should be extremely alert (irony intended) to the prospect of the Government going too far, too soon in their rush to open up and undoing everything that has gone well to this point.

At last! Reality and sense seems to have finally dawned on the powers that be that we need to start getting on with our lives again and that will mean living alongside Covid rather than cowering in fear from it. As long as the NHS can cope that is. I see even Spain are saying they are preparing to take tourists from overseas from end of June! The world has got to get working again and I expect things to start to happen pretty quickly. The real damage though is that so many people are going to be unable to shift their headspace after the quite frankly appalling journalism of the last 3 months that has absolutely and unnecessarily terrified everyone.

Yes we should ban all those journalists with these their pesky facts and evidence. We have the Ministry of Truth in No.10...

False binary. Number 10 and the media were on the same side for ages pushing the fear narrative.

Yes, we can now get them all to push the gloom and doom that a medical treatment will not be found for decades.

Happy medium would be nice.

Doom doom doom, it’s a shit situation and no one is saying it’s not - but there are positives to report on.

I call a happy medium having a free press to ask questions to the administration in charge. Yes we still have a epidemic in mistruth, but we're in a better place than many other countries...

With that we need to be real.

Scientists might break all records and have something prepared in months.

But then again, it might take years or might never come. Vaccines usually take years and coronavirus vaccines are very hard to make.

At this point, we don't know what that future holds.

For the present, we need to live with this like we do other illnesses. The best thing we currently have is our own immune systems. I'd like to see the emphasis on encouraging the boosting of those. There seems to be a lot of suggestions that Vitamin D could help stave off the worst of Covid-19 (before you get it). This might be why BAMEs are dying more than Europeans. Their dark skin repels sunlight while ours absorbs it.

Perhaps start focussing on that. A Vitamin D tablet or two won't do any harm.

I think the war on obesity initiative recently floated is another attempt to build up health and immunity.

I agree about Vitamin D supplements and my order for them arrived in the post yesterday.

Even sunny countries can have populations deficient in Vit D, so this potential link is worth keeping in mind.
