I loved seeing the very relaxed John Sopel at the last two White House press conferences. Smirking, he looked like he was about to bust out laughing at ludicrousness of the whole show.

Very true Stat. The stigma in the US to accepting government assistance comes with the label ‘socialist’ and/or ‘communist’. Some on the right reject big government assistance, some not even cashing their $1200 check from the government never wanting to be hit with these labels.
One thing that I have learnt living in the Midwest for 7 years is that people like to organize and help one another from a more community level e.g through church or work. Also, they would rather work every single day and never take a vacation than receive a penny from the government.
I didn't even look at the Media's take on it, I just watched and listened to what he had to say.
But now he's claiming he was being sarcastic
Wow. That's enlightening.
Contrary to antipodean musings it would seem, again, I have a decent understanding of life across the pond.

The irony is Trump said it, no one else, I'm sure like me when you heard what he said it is pretty damn difficult to twist those words !
His mental musings are good for ratings, I suppose.
This is rather special:

POTUS [President of the United States]: I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen. Now disinfectant or doing this maybe on the hands would work. I was asking the question of the gentleman who was there yesterday, Bill [Bill Bryan, the acting homeland security undersecretary for science and technology], because when they say that something will last three to four hours or six hours, but if sun is out, or if they use disinfectant, it goes away in less than a minute. Did you hear about this yesterday?
POTUS: When I was asking a sarcastic — a very sarcastic question to the reporters in the room about disinfectant on the inside, but it does kill it, and it would kill it on the hands and that would make things much better. That was done in the form of a sarcastic question to a reporter.
Reporter: But you were asking your medical experts to look into it.
POTUS: To look into whether or not sun — and disinfectant on the hands — but whether or not sun can help us. Because, I mean he came in yesterday and he said they’ve done a big study. This is a study. This isn’t where he hasn’t done it. This is where they’ve come in with a final report that sun has a massive impact negatively on this virus. In other words, it does not live well with humidity and it doesn’t live well with sun, sunlight, heat. It doesn’t live well with heat and sun and and disinfectant. And that’s what I brought up, and I thought that was clear.

POTUS. Yes. I do think that disinfectant on the hands could have a very good effect. Now, Bill is going back to check that in the laboratory. You know, it’s an amazing laboratory, by the way. It’s amazing the work they do. So, he’s going to check because a hard surface. This is a hard surface I guess maybe depending on whose hand you’re talking about, right? But this is a hard surface and disinfectant, disinfectant has an unbelievable — it wipes it out. You saw it? Sun and heat, and humidity and you wipe it out. And this is from tests — they’ve been doing these tests for a number of months. And the result — so then I said, ‘Well, how do we do it inside the body or even outside the body with the hands and disinfectant I think would work.’ He thinks it would work. They have to work with their doctors. but maybe there is something to light, and the human body, and helping people that are dying.

I think Sopel is a very good reporter, he knows that Trump is an imbecile, he knows that most of us know that Trump is an imbecile, he just lets the President's words condemn himself further with a bemused look on his face !

On this whole Trump is clever thing ... clearly an absolute moron and I think it's an insult to people with mental illness to describe him as mentally ill.
However I do give him some credit for being the first Western leader in modern times to work out that you can brazenly lie without consequence if you have a friendly media.
I mean other politicians have clearly lied, but not really in the same way. They've always left some sort of scope for reasonable doubt. Trump is the first to demonstrably lie and rely on his media allies and core support back him literally whatever he says.
Now he may have stumbled upon that realisation by accident, but there is some part of me that thinks there is an element of calculation there. His example has been widely followed by other leaders. In that way I do credit him with some sort of intelligence.

I've heard this a few times, but it's patently rubbish. The gun loons absolutely love him. Zero prospect of him being taken out.
It's the US equivalent of the "metropolitan elite" who have their head in their hands in despair, but writing a strongly worded placard will be the furthest they'll go to oppose him
