[Politics] Health Inequalities

Over three-quarters of claimants who appeal their assessment decision telling them that they are fit for work have the decision overturned. And that’s because these are poorly people.’

Labour’s Debbie Abrahams spent almost three minutes reading out more than 20 names of those affected, and referred to how some died after ‘taking (his/her) own life after being found fit for work’ or through illness after losing their benefits. At one stage, colleagues intervened to give Ms Abrahams time to compose herself and finish the list. Leading a Commons debate on the death of people on social security benefits since 2014, Ms Abrahams told MPs: ‘These are people’s family members and we are failing them, we’re absolutely failing them. We mustn’t let this continue.’

The issue was the leader and irrespective of whether he was actually good or bad the public's perception was he was not credible. He knew that and still stayed on and is still tainting the next leadership contest. Labour lost out when Mcluskey shafted David Miliband. Certainly not the darling of the left but electable and so in a position to influence things for the less well off.

You may well be correct on Corbyn, but given our press is pretty massively right wing in the main, do you not think whoever Labour put up will be painted as unelectable, and the majority will believe it?

brief review of the original 2010 report shows the same issues raised. almost as if there is a link between socio-economics and health. wait, thats exactly what both reports say.

so to solutions, do we pay those in poor areas more (more benefits, subsidise pay) to improve their economic and health well being?

The thing I don’t understand with the’Labour and by definition,Corbyn, is too left wing’ is that Change. org, or whatever they were finally called were a centrist/ soft left party, and they were annihilated in the Euro election and the recent GE. It was about Brexit, and, as there was only one party that absolutely guaranteed a Brexit that the leavers could vote for standing in nearly all seats, that’s who got a majority of seats, because the remain vote, that, let’s not forget, was the larger vote, was split.

We have lived with 11 years of austerity led by a Conservative Government that was faced with the biggest financial crisis since the 1930s and they did what they always do which is to reduce the size of Government expenditure across the board, which unfairly affected those who had the least.

This is some of the reason for the reduction in life expectancy but as always in addition we are coming to the end of life of those who were born and grew up during the time of rationing a time when its been generally accepted that the nations health through diet was at its best but with this generations passing we are left with my generation of 1960s babies who had everything and are oftern than not overweight unhealthy specimens well I am anyway

You lot are absolutely mental!!!!!

All it takes is one paragraph with absolutely no context and the same handful of posters are all over it.

As a kid I was never really interested in the Chicken Licken book, I just thought it was a bit silly. It's just occurred to me how true it is!

Regardless of who runs the politics, the stop/reversal of life expectency increase seems pretty obvious when stuff like McDonalds & Coca Cola run the world.

To a majority of voters who voted in the referendum in the referendum and large numbers who voted in the recent election (though not on NSC obviously!) Brexit is progress!
:lolol:

All the rhetoric focused on the past. Quite deliberately.

Go BACK to governing ourselves
Taking BACK power
Taking BACK sovereignty

Whatever way you slice it and whatever side of the argument one comes down on, it ain’t progress, baby!

Let’s not roll shit into little balls and call it anything else but shit in little balls. Brexit is retarded. In the truest sense.

Life expectancy has stalled for the first time in more than 100 years and even reversed for the most deprived women in society, according to a landmark review which shows the gap in health inequalities is yawning even wider than it did a decade ago, in large part due to the impact of cuts linked to the government’s austerity policies.

This sort of data makes it even more astonishing that a government packed with the architects and flag-wavers for austerity managed to make such electoral inroads into the very areas worst affected.

I think that there was always going to be a level at which it plateaued and then started downwards, purely because of the NHS’s inability to fund the larger, older population. I’m no economist but the lower the proportion income that goes to funding the health service, the less money there is to fund it all. I don’t blame the government, I blame us for demanding a better standard of living rather than a better quality of life.

The report is talking about the rapid mass withdrawal of public spending on benefits -- aka 'austerity' -- rather than the decline in NHS spending vis-a-vis growing demand.
And, contrary to the view you've stated, we will be able to fund the NHS if we want to. It's a political choice. It'll probably mean increasing the tax revenue somehow but, then again, that's also a political choice.

In response to your point here is a fuller summary taken from HM Government's own site:

for both males and females, the gap in life expectancy between the most and least deprived areas of England has significantly widened between the years 2011 to 2013 and 2015 to 2017 to 9.4 years for males and 7.4 years for females
the gap in healthy life expectancy was around 19 years in 2015 to 2017 for both sexes and this has not changed since year 2011 to 2013
since the baseline period, inequalities in the wider determinants of health have narrowed within England for several indicators, including children living in low income families, young people not in employment, education or training, and the employment gap between those with a long-term health condition and the overall employment rate
within England, inequality has narrowed for alcohol-related hospital admissions and self-reported wellbeing - however, babies in the most deprived areas are twice as likely as those in the least deprived to be born with low birth weight and this inequality has not changed since the baseline
there are wide inequalities in the prevalence of overweight children by deprivation and ethnicity and these have widened, or remained the same, since the baseline
although premature mortality rates from cancer and cardiovascular disease have decreased since the baseline in England, the relative inequality gap has widened, with rates in the most deprived areas twice as high for cancer and 4 times higher for cardiovascular disease than the least deprived areas
inequalities in infant mortality and suicide have not changed since the baseline

A fine record of which successive Tory governments can be justly proud. It is no wonder that poorer communities in the UK supported their cause in 2019, electing a leader who is without peer in his championing of social equality. Soon it will be free places at Eton for the deprived as opposed to the depraved.

Hand on heart - did you read those stories first before you replied? Because your two replies are barely related to the thread subject, it's just another dig at the government.

Most of the replies are a generic dig at the government, nothing to do with the OP. You could start a thread saying "GDP is down 0.1% for the month" then transplant the replies to this thread and nobody would notice.

There must be factors involved other than a Tory government but nobody is interested in that. Like most political threads these days it's not a serious conversation, it's just the same people doing competitive Tory hating.

If you're so interested in providing serious conversation, you're welcome to offer some. One place to start would be to offer an analysis of why life expectancy has stalled for the first time in about two centuries, and fallen into reverse for certain age groups. The author of the report seems pretty clear as to what are its reasons (if offered with caution).

its not the first time, thats given by the time frame of the study. there were slight drops in 2007, 2011 and 2014. the recent one is common across all europe.

Same old well thought out, tried and tested argument;

"It's not the Tory's fault, stop being anti-government".

Stop talking utter shit.

Life expectancy of vulnerable women has stalled becaue of austerity. That is the Tory's fault. Seriously, take some bloody responsibility. So weak.

So why are you bothering reading it, then?

I don't hate the Tories, but I do worry about this country whilst they are running it.
