And then you started drinking?
I've not made it to the cinema so far this year, but I have watched a few films on netflix, mainly to tick them off my oscar nominee list.
The Irishman - Never really been a fan of gangster or mob movies, I only really watched it because I like to see as many of the Oscar nominees as possible and it was all but guaranteed it would get nominated (I watched it on sunday before the nominees were announced). Eh. Didn't really do anything for me.
The Two Popes - All I knew about this was that it had Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins in it and I'd seen some delighfully rascally performances from them, and I sat down expecting some sort of comedy, perhaps in the mould of grumpy old men. So I was surprised when there were subtitles and it turned out to be a serious true life drama based on a couple of books supposedly telling the behind the scenes story of Popes Benedict and Frances. It was ok, I sometimes like talky, theological/philosophical discussion type films. It does end with them sat watching football, and honestly, I think I would have enjoyed a two hour film of them settling down and watching the football match.
Marriage Story - Typical award-baiting family drama that hollywood likes to write, focusing on artistic types (she an actress, he a director, both able to afford expensive lawyers and easily find new work). For the first half hour it felt like Adam Driver was the only likeable person in the film, then he became unlikeable too. I suspect there was a degree of deliberateness to that - divorce bringing out the ugly side of people, etc. But if the film isn't interesting enough on it's own, it can be a struggle when you don't like any of the characters.
RE: the oscar... I wasn't big on Joker, Once Upon a Time. Have no interest in Ford v Ferrari/Le Mans 66. I liked Jojo Rabbit and Little Women, though wouldn't say I liked either enough to make them best picture (in LW's defence, I'm not its target audience so it isn't likely to really sing for me). Have booked to see parasite at DoY, will try to catch 1917 soon.

People just have different expectations I suppose, almost nothing is ever universally received. It did lag for me a little when he hides out with the french woman, but other than that, I thought it was terrific. I might actually buy the blueray when it comes out, I'll be very interested to see the "making of" in the extras to see the production.
One thing that bothered me though - the bit everyone's seen in the trailer where he's running towards camera, colliding with soldiers, shells going off all over the place behind him as the 1st battalion go over the top....
...why didn't he just run along the OTHER side of the trench ?
If a soldier retreated and went back over in the wrong direction, he would have been shot. At least that is what I thought and they had soldiers making sure no one did this

I’ve seen a lot already this year.
Just back from 1917 which is everything Dunkirk wasn’t for me. Brilliantly directed, superbly acted and harrowingly realistic throughout. I honestly can’t recommend this enough.
Other notable films of the year - JoJo Rabbit which I thought was a solid 7-8/10. The Gentlemen which I thoroughly enjoyed was a solid 8/10 for the gangster and comedy elements. And Cats, which was a solid 1/10, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Oh, and I also enjoyed Spies in Disguise if you want a light hearted animated spy movie (7/10 in its respective genre).

I've not managed to watch it yet. I do intend to. I'm not normally a fan of war films, so I'm not expecting to feel the same sort of love for it others have expressed. But I like the work of all of the people I know are involved in it.

Not a conventional War Film by any measure. More of an Odyssey through a series of Hellish scenes, superbly visualised even if I have doubts about if some of it would really happened which I have commented on previously.
Once again I'll say the Central Character Performance is clearly deserving of an Oscar, but the the Septics will probably have other ideas...
I think that's kinda why I'm interested in seeing it.
They definitely have other ideas. The nominees were announced earlier this week and no acting nods for 1917. Picture, Director, Cinematography, score, screenplay, makeup, sound mixing, sound editing, visual effects, production design, and visual effects, but no acting nominations.

Just seen 1917 with Mrs V. It is all that is said about it, some parts a little dubious or not strictly accurate but at the heart of the film a great story and great acting, and not just from the leads. Andrew Scott almost unrecognisable ( at least to Mrs V ! ) and Mark Strong both have short but moving scenes. A film that is a fitting testament to the bravery and courage of those that fought in WW1 and the futility of actually fighting it. Not a film to be watched twice but certainly everyone should watch it at least once, I had tears in my eyes towards the end.

Watched 1917 last night. Good film, shame about the blood thirsty Germans and the very thin storyline. Very Marvel action hero. I'm not big on war films so that didn't help but it was still very enjoyable and extremely gripping. Just don't expect to learn much about World war one through the film.
Went to the Odeon for the 7pm showing of 1917. 6 police cars and 4 ambulance turned up. Something more extreme happened then the film itself. Ended up having to wit till 8pm to watch it. Worth it still.

Seeing 1917 on IMAX on Monday - looking forward to it, particularly with the NSCCC (Critics Corner) giving it high praise indeed.
Been on a bit of a film bash this week, a mix of old and new. Finally saw Taxi Driver (yeah, I know!) and was struck by how cheesy the music was in it! Good film though, but not sure how well it would play to a young audience these days.
Of more contemporary fare, I saw JoJo (great!) and a second watching of Knives Out (my wife wanted to see it this time) which was fun once you know the various twists and stuff. Yesterday, saw Bombshell and was a really interesting, if quite sobering, look at the Fox News sexual harassment case. Charlize Theron looked virtually like an identical twin to Megyn Kelly, more so than Nicole Kidman's Gretchen Carlson. I must admit to not knowing too much about the case, but Theron, Kidman and Margot Robbie each put in great performances.

Practically a private screening at Duke of York's this morning on account of the early (10am) kick off. Astoundingly well executed war film, basically everything Dunkirk could've should've been. Felt a bit like a video game as the two intrepid lance-corporals advanced from one level of apocalyptic set scene to the next. But that's being glib. Was shot through with large injections of humanity - which apparently wouldn't happen in Germany - and the creeping insiduous film score pressed all the right buttons in all the right places.
Despite some naggings reservations over the construction of the whole, it's hard to see what they could have done better. Though someone sometime will. Until such time, 1917 is well worthy of the bucketload of Oscars coming its way. IMHO, like.

The recent version of Dunkirk really was bad, I had little empathy for any of the characters, disliked the ludicrous Spitfire scene where it flew for many minutes without fuel and the Officer in charge of a mass evacuation ( Brannagh ) just left on the end of a deserted pier mumbling to himself. A few small cracks in this story but, overwhelmingly, a fitting tribute to Sam Mendes's Grandpops.

Not wholly the same, of course, but i felt Son of Saul was a far better wartime (yes, the 2nd, rather than 1st) immersive film of survival and purpose.

Clint's decent enough account of a well known tale from 1996 and beyond.
Characters didn't truly grab me and encourage empathy or disgust, but a decent enough 'documentary'.
Worth it if you've forgotten the story, or fancy a rant about US Police/FBI procedures.

Obviously it’s personal taste but you thought the soundtrack to Taxi Driver was cheesy?! In my opinion it’s one of Cinemas’s greatest scores. I believe it’s genuinely regarded as such. But one man’s poison and all that. Good film though.
