Fire map as of this morning. To give it some context, Sydney-Orange is about 200km as the crow flies, or about the same as London-Cardiff.

A friend in NZ has said the sky has an orange glow, and can smell burning in Christchurch. The heat and smoke is reaching a vast area.

I'm in NSW Gosford at the moment. Most days there is a thick haze on the horizon and everything gets a layer of ash dust on it. The other night people were trapped on a beach because of the smoke and this week 2 people have died. Awful.

If that is true, and the glow and smell originates from Aus, that is something like a fire in a place like Cairo or Athens being noticed in Brighton - extraordinary.

I'm near Melbourne and we have no sign of any fires here. Quite weird given the vision I was watching this morning from around the country. Previous years we have seen and smelled smoke, I suppose it has to do with wind direction and stuff.

I've seen the photos on Facebook, and Woodchip posts on Nsc occasionally.

We have seen smoke haze here in Melbourne from the NSW fires, somewhere between 300-500 miles away. Christchurch is nearly 1400 miles away from Sydney.

You could see the Blitz fires from the South Downs ie Brighton and that was a comparably much smaller area so not surprised if you can see or smell these bushfires thousands of miles away given the colossal areas aflame.

The area on fire, and uncontrollable, is about the size of south east England. It's really bad, and the severity entirely brought on by man made global warming.

Starting to resemble Hollywood movies from the noughties with mass evacuations and traffic jams today.

Terrible scenes in NSW and just to remind us we’re all in this together, NZ is covered in ash and thick smoke too.

Seriously got to change out ways or die in our millions. It won’t be the fire and storms that kill us. But the starvation and wars over what productive land remains.

I will not argue that climate change is happening.

The fires are far more severe due to less controlled burns happening in the last few years leaving more fuel on the ground to fan the current flames. Why have there been less controlled burns? Because the climate change lobby objected to them because of carbon emissions.

It’s about time science, not warriors and careerists took charge. Mrs Zefs family are in NSW, So we’re well aware. I can’t see it getting any better in a hurry. Sat looks like a potentially lethal day.

I am yet to find evidence that the 'climate change lobby' have effected the amount of controlled burning being carried out. Although this is certainly being bandied about across the media over here. Greens response here.

https://greens.org.au/bushfires

My understanding is that climate change has caused our fire seasons to become longer. This is both causing more fierce fires and less time available to carry out the controlled burning . Discussed here.

I wonder if this is also effected by government cuts to fire services?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-05/fact-check-are-nsw-firefighters-facing--budget-cuts/11747396

Apparently Barnaby Joyce is behind the Idea.
