We won’t recall White. Webster is better in this side than Duffy. Get used to it.

Dunk and Duffy were our top players last season and breaking up the partnership is unsettling to the rest of our defense, we are playing a different style, Duffy is an international and adjusts to another system,he is also a top man in our free kicks and has scored on a number of occasions

They play for Albion, not Palace.

If it was that bleeding obvious then you’d understand that replacing Webster with Duffy would have a massive impact on how well the whole team worked. It’s not FIFA where you just pick the player with the best rating and everything works perfectly because Duffy is a 78 so therefore better than Webster who is a 74. Wanting Webster dropped for Duffy is no different from wanting Connolly dropped for Murray; but people seem to overlook how important defenders are in the system we play,

For all this talk of Webster not being very good defensively it’s worth noting that we’re conceding less goals per game this season than last season. If Webster is dropped then it’ll be for Burn once Bernardo is back.

Indeed. I agree.

Bit surprised this thread is still running after it was owned by the second and their posters. The persistence of the ignorant has few limits, it seems.

Maybe after we have completely undermined Webster we can get West Ham to take him off our hands. He seems to have done a better job of handling Arsenal's attacking threat than the Irons defenders tonight.

All you guys suggesting Ben White should come back in January and go straight into the team should take a look at these stats!
Most failed passes in own half this season in championship
I’m surprised to see Ben White on this list ?
Danny Batth - 86
Mike van der Hoorn - 85
Rico Henry - 83
Tom Lockyer - 82
Christopher Schindler - 81
Reece Burke - 80
Jordy de Wijs - 79
Antonee Robinson - 77
Ben White - 76
Matty Pearson - 74
That’s an average of FOUR failed passes in each championship game !!!

Four failed passes a game doesn’t seem so bad when you realise he’s making nearly 60 passes a game.

The Amex crowd really need to calm down when we play out from the back it’s probably not helping the players. Webster was a top championship player and is adjusting, White will also need to adjust if he made the team next season the knives would be out for him just like they are for Webster. Literally no patience amongst the fan base.

With White doing so well, I do wonder if we'll look again at 5-3-2 or perhaps more accurately 3-4-3.

March as a wingback could work and would suit Montoya too. I'd think if Alzate is to be experimented with as a RB, he'd suit a RWB even more also.

I also think it would create some interesting options for the front 3 to be fluid and interchangeable which would suit a lot of our current players in the recent narrow 4-2-2-2 PotterBall we seem to favour.

This.

Webster was seen as the best defender in the Championship last season and has found it hard to maintain that form. Personally, I don't think Webster is anywhere near as bad as people are makiing out but it's clearly a bit of a step up and he's finding his feet. Why do people think White will be any different?

Albion fans, of all people should know this, two seasons ago Knockaert was the Championship player of the season, couldn't hold a regular place in a PL team and is back in the Championship. Being a good player in the Championship means nothing when it comes to PL form.

Are the knives really out though? Or are fans expressing an opinion on selection. Plenty would prefer Duffy in or White to be recalled. Others are saying Webster is better in a 3 Probably no more than 1 or 2 posters (who have a long history of proven idiocy) have gone any further than that

Judging by the OP’s opener I would say so, he’s relying on a young Ben White to step in and become VVD in Jan. Webster didn’t do anything wrong against Arsenal it was also obvious the teams energy levels dipped in the Wolves game probably for both sides especially second half. Personally I find these scapegoat threads a complete over reaction because we dropped a point, or lose a game.

People definitely watch football with a preconceived idea of a 'weak link'. They'll have an idea of who it is in their minds, and they will not register anything good they do, only errors. Stephens, Webster, Potter at the moment. They'll be a lot of fans watching the next games not seeing a single positive moment these players contribute, the moment they make a mistake though...

he's certainly struggled so far, but so have many players in their first season in the Prem. He won't command a place next season if he continues like this. Burns White etc

Watching Webster today - I haven't been as annoyed with a player's individual performance, since Gary Dicker was someone worming his way into our starting XI's on a weekly basis.

At this point - I'll acknowledge that I know why Potter is picking Webster over Duffy. He wants a ball-playing CB and I don't just think it's Duffy's lack of quality on the ball that's costing him, I also think there's a personality clash there.

That said - Webster cannot defend. He cannot win a header to save his life. He continuously goes on these mazy runs half way up field, loses the ball and on many occasion costs us a goal. And, he's not very good at tackling.

On top of that - watching his 'distribution' today. That thing he's basically getting in the team because of. It was non-existent. Dunk is still the main outlet through our defence.

I understand that the game has changed - and Potter wants a CB who can play in this system. But you've still got to actually defend.

The reality is - the guy cost £20m. He's our record signing (or maybe Maupay just edges it - but you get the point). And he is the weak link in the team.

I'd take a CB who wins every tackle, puts his head through every header and looks like a genuine leader on the pitch, every time.

Also worth noting - our style of play didn't suffer against Norwich when Duffy came on, did it?

I really appreciate that you put the bit about failing to understand Gary Dicker's role in the Poyet team, so it was clear from the outset, the value of your insight.

What happens if White has a stinker in his first few games? You've got to stick with him or bench him which stalls his progress. Everyone needs to calm down with White, let him have his full season with Leeds and assess in the summer. Webster is a professional with a lot more experience than White.

Adam Webster has a 86% passing completion rate this seasons n. Overall he has had 9 incomplete passes in the premier league . That is in all areas of the pitch. Ben White has anaversgebof FOUR failed passes per game in his own half in the championship!!
Stats mean nothing I know but they are interesting none the less

Yes, I thought the very same - a very useful pointer as to how seriously to take that post
