As somebody said to me at The Amex today if you think the country owes you a living and you want to attempt to get rich by doing nothing vote Labour.

Id love to get rich doing nothing. Are Labour planning to find me a long-lost rich uncle and scrap inheritance?

Labour promise compensation to women over pensions - upto £58b

I think they have smashed the £250B barrier on spending promised now, let's hope they find an interest free credit card to pay for all of this

thats a bit of a problem for the grey book costings, unless they do indeed lump it into the uncosted National Transformation slush fund.

You'd have to be a selfish, arrogant, egomanic, headcase who isn't actually commitment to the greater good to get this close and not do something to make it happen:-

Thinking along the same lines. They will be delving into the magic bucket before long with more promises of extravagant spending

No idea why a party led by a terrorist sympathising Marxist, mired in antisemitism and promising to create the biggest tax burden since World War II is struggling to attract support from the Great British public

I met the Labour candidate for Eastbourne & Willingdon, Jake Lambert, yesterday outside the station where he was handing out leaflets before the game. (Maybe I should have started a separate thread entitled 'Labour party handing out leaflets outside Eastbourne station..')

He was a very, very nice young man. I did enquire as to what the **** are you actually doing, as you can't win and you're just going to split the vote and help the Tories win it back, but he politely elaborated in his response as to why they have no choice and Stephen Lloyd must be crushed.

The Tory manifesto is about to be launched, an austerity-busting piece but with a commitment not to increase income, tax, National Insurance or VAT. That would be impossible to achieve without crippling borrowing.

So my personal choice is foist crippling debt and Brexit onto my kids, or personally pay about £5K more a year just in corporation tax, or vote Lib Dem and have none of that shit.

Thus conveniently brushing over all the projected losses by Labour to the Conservatives in the north

How many seats are the Tories projected to win from Labour?

(genuine question because that's the first time I've picked up on that possibility)

Bozza I'm rather kicking myself as I did mean to add words to the effect of:-
'I have no who this fella is or if the numbers hold up - but I believe the principle does'.

Another slightly more creditable take on the same point.

I'm not disputing the theory is sound at all, I'm just saying that well-intentioned Nick seems to be a bit of a simpleton.

Biggest tax burden since WW2?!? Oh dear. Try reading about the tax rates of the 1960s or 1970s, or if you haven't got time just listen to 'Taxman' by The Beatles.

Labour have rightly pledged to increase tax to part fund their pledges, but what's in their manifesto cannot fully be afforded by tax and fiscal changes. It's a fantasy wishlist the the like of which the British elcctorate haven't witnessed since 2016.

dozens. there are ~160 leave voting Labour seats, and many of those where the polls reckon Labour could be threatened. the scenario relies on a large votes for Brexit and Liberals in areas eroding Labour vote, however its conceviable 30-40 seats?

that Nick fella prediction shouldnt be taken very seriously, he's overlooked for SNP to get 48 will cost number of Labour seats too.
also fresh poll from Britain Elects has Scottish Tory gain +7%, Brexit vote collapsed <1%. how Brexit and Liberals do, where they take votes, will be more important to final seat count than Labour or Conservative campaigns.

The Tories are projected to lose seats in Scotland and probably lose a few south/south west seats to the Lib Dems, therefore, they can only get a majority if they take seats off Labour

Latest 'guess' I have seen is a Projected 48 seat majority

Only repeating what was reported in the Times ...

The Institute for Fiscal Studies said the plans would create the biggest tax burden since World War II while the Resolution Foundation, another think tank, said the size of the state would reach a post-war high and outstrip even Germany.

If you know your history, this is all panning out a bit like 1945,for after the War, read Brexit idiocy.Labour with a raft of truly radical proposals, Tories saying we can’t afford that, except, then the Tories had Winston, and Labour had Attlee, 2 giants of politics.
Result, Labour landslide and they transformed the country.

I don’t think the good guys will get a landslide this time though.

P.S. Before anyone has a seizure, this post is relatively tongue in cheek.

There are significant comparisons between this election and 1992. Traditional Labour voters are going to move away from the party to vote for an already unpopular Tory government because they don’t feel the Labour leader is “Prime
Ministerial enough” and they will regret it hugely within months. The next 5 years will be full of turmoil and meanwhile, a new and more credible Labour leader will be elected and they’ll go on to win the next election.
