[Albion] Neil Maupay - has he had the credit he deserves yet?

I was in SW corner for the first time in years, and I think Maupay must have shagged the wife on the chap behind us. He was on his case from the first shot and never let up. Yes, a goal or two would have been the icing on the cake, but I thought that was a great striking display. Several times there was a long ball up to him, against 2 defenders and he managed to get the other side of them and get a shot or pass away. I think he will learn to calm down in front of goal and score a good few. Theres much less time in the PL v champ so he's snatching at chances at the moment.

For Maupay's first couple of months, i'm giving him 6.5/10. Not bad, room for improvement, but clear signs of potential

I think Maupay has gone from very likely to play, to quite likely to play.

It will be interesting to see what we'll do if we go to one striker. Has Connolly edged above him?

I’m going to disagree with you there....I certainly sympathise if you are close to someone getting on a players case and I certainly wouldn’t get on Maupays back....but for a striker scoring is part of the cake and not icing ...he’ll be annoyed with himself for not scoring yesterday

I know he is getting recognition for his goals but I wonder if we're missing some of the other things he contributes to the team? I'm no tactical expert, and I know we have some people on here who study these things, so I'd love to know if (as I suspect) he is contributing far more than just goals?

Any thoughts?

(Neal of course - apols)

From what I have seen he is either overrated or has not found his touch yet. Sure he gets into position, gets the chances, but then stuffs it up. The image I have of him is constantly giving apologetic looks to his team mates. Hopefully he will settle down and start converting more of those chances.

Our finishing has to improve significantly if we're going to get anything out of our next 3 games. Maupay was the worst offender yesterday, but 5 on target out of 21 says that it's not just him who needs to do better in front of goal.

Aye...but as its his thread it seems sensible to comment on him here...and he had the most clear cut “chances”imho

I like him. Direct. Good movement. Puts himself about and Gets their defenders running the other way which is the opposite to last year. Poor finishing yesterday though and snatched at his chances.

Totally agree our finishing needs to improve from strikers but what have our midfield been aiming at in the last few years of training? Must be good because they are so consistent high and wide, Stephens and Propper should havd had 4,5,6 goals each each season but worry the pidgeons more than the goal. Solly can’t finish and hope Alzate isn’t coached by the same bloke that’s made the previously mentioned three so deadly

This forum never ceases to amaze me. A 23 year old lad who is just 11 games into his PL career is getting criticised after scoring four goals and establishing himself as the focal point of a fluid, pacy, threatening attack that bares no comparison to any we have seen in our colours before. Of course he’ll miss a few chances, what striker doesn’t? But I think he’s been absolutely superb. As for comparisons to Murray, that’s laughable. Maupay is clearly in the team because he can perform the role required of a striker in Graham’s system and Murray can’t. Even if he doesn’t score another goal all season, he’ll be picked over Murray every week for that reason.

What do people want? Shall we bring back Jurgen and Florin instead? After all we know they’d be good for 7 in 64.

Nobody is writing the bloke off. Did you expect those misses on Saturday were just going to be ignored? They were pretty bad.

I think the response has been largely quite measured

Completely agree. The finishing from the midfield has been woeful for sometime. Alzate gets a pass from me on this one, firstly as he has only just broken into the side and secondly when he has missed he's at least managed to look reasonably convincing.

If you put together a youtube compilation of every attempt at goal that Propper and Stephens have tried since promotion, it would reduce us to tears. Neither of them believe they can score and they lack even the basics of composure or technique in this area. Odd really, as they are both clearly decent players in the middle third of the pitch. Compare it to someone like Hendrick who showed against us he can burst through and get a decent shot away which can affect a game, it shows that this is something that is really missing from this side.

I didn’t see him miss a chance on Saturday that was any worse than what you see numerous times every PL weekend. What I have seen is someone score 4 in 10 starts. Everton paid £35m for a striker this summer who can’t even get on the pitch, let alone score a goal. What would our fans make of that? West Ham’s £45m striker has an identical record to Maupay and Newcastle’s £40m signing has 1 in 11. Perspective.

Great post.

I’m sure Maupay would have liked a couple more goals but overall his contribution to our performances this season has been excellent, as you say 4 from 10 is decent and I’m massively confident more goals are going to come.

He is also still young and has only made 10
Premier league starts so he deserves some leeway. I’m a big fan.

The one near the end of the first half that he put over? That would look bad in Sunday league. Not knocking the bloke but some of that finishing can't evade scrutiny. The 4 goals include a penalty and a 2 incher against Spurs. (Two good finishes for his other two, again i'm not anti him at all). I suppose my point is that he had more chances against Norwich than he will in his next 4 games put together. He'll have to do better (and we all will) in front of goal to take points from those games.

Yesterday the Albion had:-

21 shots 5 on target 2 goals = Maupay needs to do better.

Man City

26 shots 4 on target 2 goals = Agüero needs to do better?

Liverpool

25 shots 6 on target 2 goals = Salah/Mane needs to do better?

Chelsea

16 shots 10 on target 2 goals = Abrahams needs to do better?

Wolves

24 shots 8 on target 1 goal = Barry Wolf needs to do better?

There's some heads firmly lodged in their own backsides on this and other threads.

Spot on!

We'd all like 100% conversion of good chances but even the very best miss pretty frequently (as your stats show).

Maupay, Connolly and Trossard are all virtually brand new to both BHA and the Premier League.

The fact that we've scored 3 goals in 3 games already suggests that this won't be a problem this season. We managed that just twice the whole of last season in the Premier League!

I hope Maupay doesn't read these threads! He ran his heart out on Saturday and I'd be pretty pi***ed off if I read this level of criticism......

This. That was an absolutely shocking miss. OK, for now we're all over the moon that he's a clear upgrade on the two 'strikers' that have been shipped out to foreign climes. But work rate alone won't cut it for very long, any more than it did for CMS, COG etc.
