[Albion] Maupay / Trossard / Andone - front 3

If we go all Football Manager.

He could be an AMC in a 3-4-1-2 formation behind the strikers and ahead of the midfield. With freedom to roam and instigate attacks. I think this could be beneficial to him due to his lack of pace. He doesn't have to push as forward as the front 2 and wing backs, but can pick up loose balls from crosses and ping them out to the wings or thread the through balls from behind. Could be exciting.

Exactly. Should be as simple as a tweak of the front 3, from a "flat" front three to a front two with someone (like Gross/Bissouma/Propper) in behind.

Any chance we’ll ever see these 3 start a premier league game as our front 3? The thought excites me.

Yes very lightweight and no height (under Potter shouldn’t matter so much) BUT the movement and pace would be amazing....

Just imagine...!

Yes please! I wouldn’t be surprised at some point - fluidity, pace, technical ability on the ball and able to finish. It could be really exciting.

Whilst our boys are obviously not quite of the same ability - Sterling, Sane, Aguero and Salah, Mane Firminho are not especially tall or about physicality. We could easily have the lower class version with that front three.

Height less of concern with 3 big centre backs

It's a conundrum isn't it. If any of last years signing step up, there will be real selection headaches.

And what about Propper playing further forward if we sign a central midfielder?

I'd like to see Propper pushed forward as he does for the NEtherlands . . . so Maybe Stephens sweeping up ahead of 3 navvies . . . with Gross and Propper ahead . . . . Maupay and Trossard free up front, AND wing backs. potentially quite exciting

reality will no doubt bite.

So what’s your preferred starting 11 in the formation you suggested ?

Guarantee what ever I say, you'll find something pick at. I'm not a football manager with access to terrabytes of data on opposition and individual players to decide how and where a player will play.

That said

Ryan

Duffy
Dunk
Webster

March
Propper
Stephens
Benardo

Gross*

Trossard*
Maupay

*freedom to roam

But what ever formation we play, someone has to be left out, that's literally the case for every club.

Not at all.....just struggling to see how Gross, Trossard and Locadia (who GP seems to like) can be accommodated with two front (from Muzza, Andone and Maupay) as the wingbacks are essentially the wingers.

Good problem to have......world away from last season. Interesting to see what GP does.

3-4-1-2 would also allow Bissouma to fit in as an alternative to Gross, being more box-to-box rather than Gross being more likely to stick to the attacking role.

Of course it is. But it's not in every club that there is a sea change in approach to playing style. Some of last seasons "nailed on" starters might now not fit into the new style. That's where the interesting debate is occurring I think.

I think you might find AJ out on loan by Thursday.

What!? And leave us with a RW gap!? I think not.

Would not be surprised, or at all against it.

Balogun too.

Not even sure about Balogun now. 5 CB’s for 3 places sounds about right to me.

For the two 'wide forward' positions, we are selecting from:

Andone
Trossard
March (when Bernardo reclaims his spot)
Groß
Locadia
Izquierdo (when fit)
Jahanbaksh

I can't see Jahanbaksh getting many chances to prove he can step up. Pressure on him to show a lot more, very quickly.
Well Izquierdo won't be fit (or even in the squad) until Christmas, so let's cross him off the list for now. Groß isn't good out wide. Andone may well get some time out there, but will presumably be competing with Maupay for the central role.

That takes us down to 4: Trossard, March, Locadia and Jahanbaksh.

With March also trialling as a wing-back Ali J should get his chance.

If you've got a specific formation, and two players for each position, then those left out are competing for the place, and get the chance when they other is rested/suspsended/injured. The question with Gross is where he'd fit in to our formation. Even when others are out, it's difficult to see where he fits in.

On what has been seen in the pre season games I would prefer Locadia to Andone as he has looked the sharper of the two and offered more in terms of goals and assists to GM.

I wonder whether Izzy is expected to come back from this injury or not as we seem over filled with wide players even for a 25 man squad.

Those 3 would be very exciting to see all at once but it will depend on what formation we settle on and weather that changes during a game. Potter may wish to have a line up that could revert to a back 4 without needing to make a substitution especially during our first few matches whilst the squad plays against better opposition than they have in preseason.

It's interesting how many of the top sides played 3 CB's a couple of seasons ago but have now reverted to a back 4. The main reason being it allows you more attacking options on the field

I think he might go for Locadia to start with as he's used him a lot in pre-season
