Blimey people!

This Sunday and Next Sunday are the same bloody day, May 5th. The only time This Sunday is different to Next Sunday is when it is actually Sunday. In all truth 'This Sunday' is a stupid phrase that doesn't mean anything and should be put down.

This Week, or This Year, are the week or year you are currently in the middle of, and Next Week and Next Year are the one after that. So really, This Sunday has no logical meaning except when it is actually Sunday, and certainly is not distinguishable from Next Sunday except in that precise scenario.

There is no argument here whatsoever. If someone says "meet you next Sunday", and the other person doesn't understand, then you will have to clarify by saying;

"this Sunday coming" or " the Sunday after". The use of "next" in the above statement is wrong.

To avoid any obfuscation, the correct nomenclature for the original statement should be either "meet you this Sunday" or "meet you Sunday week". It's all in the way we speak, people. The words are there to avoid confusion, and the English language is a beautiful thing. Use it properly.

Exactly “see you Sunday or see you Sunday week” takes away confusion.

No next Sundays thanks.

Why would you need "next"?

Surely it would either be "today" or "Sunday".

No. You wouldn't need 'This'. This Sunday is a stupid phrase. Next Sunday is perfectly fine to mean the next Sunday.

We say This Week to refer to the week we are in, not any forthcoming one. Same with This Month, This Year, This Decade, and, albeit more rarely used, This Day or This Hour. So logically, This Sunday only makes sense when said on a Sunday, although as you point out no one would actually say that, and thus the phrase is redundant. It has instead been co-opted by people to refer to the next Sunday, but that doesn't mean we subsequently need to change the meaning of Next Sunday. In this context, next and this have the same meaning

My birthday is the 12th.

I’m totally confused now. According to this thread it is next Sunday but I thought it was on Sunday week!

Given the confusion (for some) has anyone turned up a week early for an event when told its next Sunday

I've told this story on here before, but my Father once ordered and receive tickets to see Peter Kay at the O2, London.

He travelled down on the train with his new Mrs, rocked up at the O2, was amazed at how easy it was to get there, how wonderfully quiet the restaurants were, and just how relaxed it all was. He marvelled at just how much room in the O2 there must be to make a sell-out show so calm and quiet all over the building. All the bars we virtually empty, no queues for the toilets, and even the car park only had a smattering of cars in.

He was a year early. Never read the tickets properly. :lolol:

No. This Sunday specifies that it's the coming Sunday, as opposed to Next Sunday which is the next one after this Sunday.

What you're actually saying there, using a perfectly reasonable Oxford dictionary definition of the uncapitalised word 'next', is :

This Sunday specifies that is the next Sunday, as opposed to Next Sunday which is the next one after next Sunday.

For me it kind of depends.

On a Sunday:

Next Sunday is in seven days.

On Monday:

Next Sunday is in 6 days.

On a Saturday:

Next Sunday is in 8 days

Not sure about Tuesday to Friday though.

Clearly the answer depends on which day of the week you are using the words, and the emphasis you put on them.

On a Monday, you can easily say "I'm thinking of going to the beach next Sunday" - by which you mean the next one coming.

From Tuesday, it would probably be best to switch to "this Sunday". NEXT (emphasised) Sunday would mean in the following week.

If you use such a phrase on a Saturday you are clearly talking about 8 days time.

No, no I wouldn't. If you headed down to the beach to meet me, you'd be waiting for seven days.
