I’m biased too obviously but it’s funny how I had just posted about him in the Iranian fans thread - he’s everything you can ask for as a central defender. Getting him for free makes it way, way better. I’d even go so far as saying I’d rate him as the best Iranian footballer at the moment along with Jahanbakhsh.

Good in the air, can mark agile/quick players very well, and a tough guy.

If Amir Hashemi is a decent agent (Alireza’s agent) bringing him to Brighton shouldn’t be a tough task/shouldn’t require much convincing.

I'm pretty sure a 26 year old World Cup playing Iranian international currently plying his trade in Qatar proves BG right.

I believe only yesterday Gary Mabbutt, no less, called Morteza Pouraliganji James Collins' 'brother from another mother', for that reason I'm in.

I've watched this guy play on a few occasion. He's one of the most consistent CB's I've ever seen. He's gone under the radar so far but just watching him defend vs Spain and Portugal in the WC was EXTREMELY impressive. I've never seen him make a single mistake. I really hope he comes to Brighton, I'm really going to start believing for a top 10 finish then :)!

There really isn't much posted on him but here is a 4 year old video about some of how he play. Frankly what has impressed me is his defensive ability which I don't find are put in evidence in this video!

Right then, a bit more about him if you guys are interested. He is the best performing player in the national team and he is very well rounded. Strong on set pieces(especially at defending them) and in the air. He's very traditional and he's a no-nonsense defender as in he doesn't **** about with the ball. He reads the play well and has very good antipation and awareness as well as composure. I wouldnt necessarily describe him as a "modern defender" but he is by no means a donkey on the ball. By now you're probably thinking "alright pipe down mate he's not bloody cannavaro" and you'd be right- most of what i described, he's been doing mostly against farmers. When the world cup came, i was worried this would be exposed and he'd have a tough time. Not only did he hold his own, he excelled. In the first game against Morocco he was his usual brilliant self- then came the real test. Costa who had absolutely bullied Pepe and Fonte in the previous game, wasn't given a peep by morteza. (The goal he scored was a freak deflection from one of our defender's clearances). Then after that it was the Portuguese Murray that made himself at home in Morteza's pocket. Having been left frustrated all game after scoring 4 goals in his previous 2 games, Ronnie did nothing all game but throw his toys out the pram and elbow morteza in the face.

Having said this, I don't reckon it's a great move for him to join Brighton because of your already well-established CB pairing. He'd be a backup and from my understanding, you lot already have a capable backup anyway and as Dingodan said, he would want to be playing consistently to stay in form for his national team. It especially applies to him because he's in his prime years at 26.

All in all, i think that if these rumours are not fabricated nonsense and he does end up signing, then you can expect a more than capable backup. Beware though, if you guys ever go through a struggling phase, you can be sure to see loads of "play morteza! " or "idiot manager!" Comments on social media.

As much as I would love this to happen it would create an almighty headache for Chris. I don't see how we can change our starting CB pairing after last season, and are we really going to have two international world cup finalist CBs as backup? International players need to be playing regularly in order to get selected for their national team.

Would be amazing to have such strength in the squad, but I can't see how we could keep all 4 happy, assuming nobody is on their way out in this window.
An injury could occur at anytime we got lucky last season.

Exactly. I think potentially this would be a good signing.

In terms of of the HGP, both Norwood and Baldock aren’t bad players, in fact IMO the PL would suit Norwood more than the championship.

Baldock although down the pecking order, hasn’t really been given a chance, and Andone has a ‘minor’ injury, Locadia has done his groin, Murray although fit again turned his ankle and is getting on, which only leaves us with Hemed and Baldock.

Possible.

Hemed has been looking good so far. I just think that cashing the Norwood cheque would be more lucrative for a player (like Baldock) who would struggle to get even a bench appearance in the Premier League.

This. A liitle bit concerned about the first few games of the sason, Locadia is carrying a knock already, Andone presumably won't be considered for at least the Watford and the Manchester United games, as he hasn't even kicked a ball for us yet, so that just kleaves us with Murray, and errr . . . Hemed.

Tomer seems to have done well in our pre season games and bagged a few goals, so who knows, he could at least be on the bench for our opening league games.

This really spooks me.

And makes me convinced we'll get another striker in the squad, with both Hemed and Baldock leaving.

A high quality player and also I think it would make it easier for Ali to settle with another player from his country in the squad so a win/win and on a free, an absolute no brainer.

No more than 17 players registered for Albion’s squad can be designated as ‘foreign’, with at least eight players having to be classed as ‘homegrown’.

My understanding is that only the first part of this is true. You cannot have more than 17 non HGP, but you don’t have to have 8 HGP because you can have fewer than 25 in squad.

A further thought, if he signs amazing to think club will have managed to get 2 international CBs and ensured Goldson can play regularly after surgery and netted £3m+ in the process

A much better option than Moore ( £15 million ).

No need to worry about him being non-HGP, Suttner or Hemed could make way to give him a place in the 17 allowed.
