There is something genuinely beautiful about that aircraft. Every time I see it, I find it stirring. Kind of like when you look on a fine 1960's Ferrari, there is just something deeply pleasing about it's design, its shape, its lines. I've probably made 2 or 3 model Spitfires in my time, and I'm almost in a mood to make another one now. Is Beatties still open ?

I was at the High Hurstwood Summer Fete Saturday and a Spitfire did 4 low passes – they are undeniably magical awe inspiring planes, the wing shapes are just so beautiful you'd be forgiven for thinking they were done purely for aesthetics over being the best flying fighting machines.

Definitely a beautiful plane, but the hurricane was more deadly. Pretty sure it was quite close, something like 55% - 45% in favour of the hurricane in terms of kills.
And as bizarre as it may sound to most people, given the chance I'd rather fly a Me-109.

The total number of fighter planes was about 63% Hurricane, 37% Spitfire. Both had their merits and differences, don't think you can say one was more deadly, had they not worked in tandem, we would likely have lost the BoB.

I believe that when the Luftwaffe came a-calling the bombers were taken on by the Hurricanes, and the escorts (fighters) were engaged by Spitfires.

I am well and truly fed up with all this hyperbolic praise of the Spitfire, whilst the poor much maligned Hawker Hurricane barely gets a mention.

Yes l freely acknowledge that the Spit was the superior aircraft in almost every way, faster, more manoeverable, more gunpower etc. etc. But the simple fact remains that the Hurricane shot down far more enemy aircraft in the Battle of Britain than the Spitfire ever did. It goes without saying that had we lost the Battle of Britain, then we would have lost the war, and for that reason, at the very least, the humble Hurricane should take it's rightful place at the top table.

Maybe maligned isn't quite the right word, would overlooked have been better? Many people seem to think that the Spitfire was the only fighter aircraft that we possessed, whereas in the all important first couple of years of the war their were comparitively few of them and it was the Hurricane that did the lions share of the work. Where would be today without it?

True, and anyone who knows the story of the BoB knows that neither aircraft could have won it on their own, that actually having 2 aircraft with different characteristics often was the difference in many of the engagements. The 109 was a fantastic aircraft in its own right too, at the end of the day, it often came down to numbers, whether the radar picked up incoming early, who got higher first and the skill and bravery of the pilots.

The hurricane is not much maligned. It shot down more aircraft mainly because there were more of them than the Spitfire,as they were made of wood and so quicker to manufacture. They were also easier to maintain and keep in the air.

I’ve had the pleasure of a few VIP tours at the Battle of Britain flight at RAF Coningsby and both aircraft are very impressive. The noise from the merlin engine during a ground run igoes right through you.
During one tour with some ex British and German fast jet pilots one of the German pilots hugged a Spitfire and remarked that this aircraft was why he decided to become a pilot. All the pilots were like kids in a sweet shop.

In my RN days I worked on Harriers and recently been around Typhoons and to be honest they are both a bit MEH, as nothing compares to Spitfires, hurricanes and the Lancaster.

I was also fortunate to see an Me109 doing circuits whilst in Germany and that to was very impressive.

Been mentioned on related threads on here a few times before, but for anyone interested this really is a fantastic book on the Battle of Britain, and the relative merits of all planes involved (as well as pilots, tactics, politics etc).....

A couple of years ago a group of WW2 planes flew from the Eastbourne show over Brighton.

The engine sound and beautiful elliptical wing shape of the Spitfire stood out from miles away.

Not just a thing of beauty, it was an absolute nightmare for Axis fighters and bombers.

My grandad was an RAF engineer in the Second World War, he said the Hurricanes could sustain a lot more damage than the Spits and remain airborne.

He loved the Lancasters most though.
