IMO its very much the right move,to have our 4th choice, come from the under 23s (With Bruno able as well ).I just cannot see how CH would keep a Duffy etc happy, unless he was playing, unless Dunk was going .

Hughton is looking to have at least 4 champ quality centre backs, 4 midfielders, 4 wingers and 4 strikers with a strong u23 squad to dip into in case there is an injury crisis.
Its his job to keep em happy, keep em motivated..The depth of the squad is the one thing he said he could improve on last year. Having strength in depth could give us those extra points/goals to get us up. In which case a Duffy or a Norwood or a Pritchard (sadly) is to add to the squad... not a replacement..
All promotion candidates are looking to do the same.

You are one of a few who actually post sensible stuff regarding the Albion and worth reading/replying. Lack of depth killed our hopes last year when we could have won the Championship. Some People on here seem to be unable to grasp what depth actually means.

Please carry on.

Surely it depends on how good he (White) is not how old. I assume the clubs thinking is that he is good enough hence Dallison on loan and Rea allowed to leave.

There are experienced CBs available who could be brought in like we did with Upson for 12 months, without breaking the bank. The problem is bringing in some body lijke Duffy for £3m + who wouldnt be good enough for the Premier if we got promoted.

Why would a decent CB,come to us for a maximum twelve month contract?
If he was good enough to be a replacement for Greer, he would want a good wedge, and a longer contract, if he wasn't good enough, why would we want him, when he may only be in contention for a first team place until Hunemeir is fit.The ideal solution would be to sign a good CB now, however, as always with good players, that is far easier said than done. I do wonder if we had someone lined up as an early replacement for GG, but something happened and it fell through

Gamble or not, you can't always buy your way out of a problem when it causes its own problems. We don't need another defender on the books when we have the numbers already. There is no bottomless pit of money - not for us anyway.

I think that playing alongside Dunk he would not let us down , based on the EFL Cup game, but it would be hard on LR to be dropped for Bruno to return to right back.
Rosenior wouldn't be the one to miss out, I'd wage a fair bet that it would be Bong who simply hasn't been the player he was before his injury. Rosenior will be first choice LB

According to most at Derby Bong got better as the game progressed but then on the EFL Cup thread you said about Ince playing out of position at CB. We signed him from Chelsea as a CB and Oscar played him out of position. So your view on Bong could be somewhat tainted.

The whole team played well on Saturday.

Ince has played one game in defence for us, and that was on Tuesday night. Ince to me is a holding midfielder, that's where he played under Oscar, Hyypia, Hughton before he changed the formation and Jokanovic at Fulham.

If the whole team played well at Derby why should CH drop Bong and plah his cover there, Ince was a CB at Chelsea and was moved by Oscar to play in front of the back four and despite Hypia and lately CH giving him the chance as a DMF. Having proved to CH that he wasnt good enough playing there and us being short of CBs CH tried him in his origianal position , more probably by circumstances than choice, and he came through it. well. It wouldnt surprise me to see CH squash his plan for a 4th choice CB and use Ince in the role until the others are ready.

It's all about opinions BG but if you asked the majority on here who would be their choice to start at left-back the majority will say Rosenior because he is a better player, more determined and is more of an influence in the team.

Ince did play well and won the majority of his ariel battles, whether or not he could produce the same level of performance in the Championship rather than a L2 side fairs to be seen.

As you say it is about opinions but I feel that we lose something having a right footed player at left back so would go with Bong much as I like LR. I also think it will be the same XI to start.

Having just 6 defenders in the senior squad once the transfer window shuts would certainly be a courageous strategy.

We moved on two of our promising young CBs (Dallison on loan, and Rea permanently) and brought in Hall, with SPL experience - but young White gets the nod ahead of him. Perhaps the powers that be think that White is actually a gem of young talent that can actually move up this season and be our 4h. choice CB?

Personally I think it is a positive step, but not forgetting it is driven by policy and probably a desire from within the club to show that the Academy with its massive budget is developing and working, rather than a youngster that has jumped to the head of the queue due to having an obvious greater talent than some of his peers.

It seems he has caught the eye of Hughton this pre season and jumped ahead of players such as Dallison, Barclay and others, so good luck to him, I havent seen him for a while but he was always very assured and dare I say it sometimes too casual but I look forward to see him progress this season.

Ince won't be counting towards the central defensive or midfield numbers this season.

Goldson been training for a week, surely back for Rotherham. Do need another centre back but doesn't need to be of high standard just an average champo player would do. No one of any quality would come to sit on the bench anyway.

The top squad are weak at defending from corners, so if he is as good?

It was Greer & Hünemeier against Boro at home.

As has been said by others on here, Hughton has said he is looking for a CB. That may well be the case, but of course hat doesn't mean he will actually get one. He has however brought in Hall, and White now seems to have edged ahead of him. Perhaps it will turn out to be the case that these two between them will be our 4th. choice CB; competition between them for the place - good.

A risk maybe - but quite an exciting one. I for one wouldn't be too unhappy if CH and co. decide to run with it.

We didn't lose much last season when we had LR playing at LB, right footed or not. He was one of the successes of the season!
