Batting first will be good news to under pressure Hales and Vince who will get more of an opportunity of time at the crease to preserve their position in the starting XI.

Fair catch review on Hales. This could be interesting. That looks to have bounced to me, but soft signal was out.........

Hales out and not happy. The way Shah celebrated was quite convincing. I guess you need to trust the fielder.

53/1 at drinks.

Only 12 overs bowled in that first hour, so another 78 to get through in 5 hours of cricket. Pakistan don't help themselves; they're looking at another long final session with an old ball and their bowlers tiring. One of England's greatest strengths is to pile on the hurt in a final session at home.

Cook gone... half-tracker just outside off, played pull-flick, under-edge and dragged it on :nono:

69-2 (16.5 overs)

In 2016 Pakistan seemed like just another test series,
but it wasn't.
It was different in many ways, as so were those that did the batting
Against Sri Lanka the average gained by Alex Hales was over 56
Against Pakistan it was 19.
Nininini Nineteen.

The edging and nicking of the past four weeks continued today
45 miles west of Southend
I really wasn't sure what was going on.

Ni-nineteen 19
19,19,19,19.

and now Root :nono:

caught behind off Wahab for 26... not a good shot pushing at one outside off :nono:

73-3 (17.4 overs)

Decision to bat looking dodgy :nono:

It doesn't seem to have moved around much, reasonable bounce... so I think the 3 batsmen will be disappointed. Hopefully the middle order can dig us out of a hole here.

Crikey Vince :nono:

That was a really poor shot... or non-shot really.

A bit short, instinctively fended at it rather than play a positive shot... and nicked to the keeper for just 1

74-4 (19.1 overs)
