Not really, no. And in any case, where would you add tax to make up for the shortfall? Income tax? Penalise hard work. VAT? Horribly regressive.

I'd look to take more on Capital Gains Tax. The headline about banker's paying less tax than their cleaners was because 20% basic rate tax plus 9% / 11% NI is less than 28% top rate of tax on Capital Gains on investments like share options.

I can't believe Labour haven't made more of the top rate still only being 28%, it should be at the marginal rate of income tax, so 20%, 40% and 45%, not 18% then 28%.

Also, there are still some remarkably generous CGT reliefs, i.e. the £40,000 Letting Relief that often wipes out any taxable gain on properties once lived in as main residence subsequently let out for years, then sold. This combines very nicely with Private Residence Relief, and some clients have practically skipped out of the door once I'd told them they'd have no tax to pay at all on six-figure property gains.

I'm sure CGT reforms could eat into £3-4billion raised by IHT.

Osborne say's that 80% of new job's are full time, yeah either below minimum wage or a zero hour contract, how can you live like that, the budget is totally laced with Tory Propaganda to try and win the sheep over for more votes in May, Well they haven't duped me, only a fool would vote Conservative...only Labour will look after the working class...vote labour if you have any sense... It's Labour or bust in May for the working class...

Does anyone on this planet believe this?

Borrowing set to fall from £97.5bn in 2013-14 to £90.2bn in 2014-15, £75.3bn in 2015-6, £39.4bn in 2016-7, £12.8bn in 2017-8 before reaching a £5.2bn surplus in 2018-9

Pretty much same as they said 5 years ago and they've put on almost as much debt as every other government in history

Yep, those are just numbers plucked from the air with very little basis in reality. Osborne has borrowed like there has been no tomorrow. If FFP applied to governments then he would be facing a transfer embargo or a large fine at the very least.

It would be the first Labour did look after the working class.

It will all be OK as long as there some people that trust politicians with their cash for a 1.97% for 15 years

Sadly there will be some clowns who believe this nonsense.

Full time is now 30 hours a week or more according to the ONS , I wonder what the percentage of those 80% of new full time jobs are paid at minimum wage or within 20p an hour more ? It is disgraceful to say the minimum wage will rise to £8 an hour by the end of the decade when that rate is considered to be a "living wage" NOW.

The bit I've highlighted is complete and utter tripe. Totally laughable. Good grief. :nono: Tax is a part of civilised society. If you don't like it, I guess you could always go and live in Haiti or some other third world dump?

Let's ne clear about this:
If you leave an estate of £320,000, no tax is paid by anyone
If you leave an estate of £500,000, £72,000 is paid in tax and a chosen few benefit to the tune of £428,000. For doing NOTHING!
If you leave an estate of £1m, £270,000 is paid in tax and a chosen few benefit to the tune of £630,000. £630k for doing NOTHING!!!

And if not inheritance tax, a tax that nobody is penalised for and does more to reduce the disparity of wealth than any other policy, then that shortfall needs to be made up elsewhere. Where would you prefer?

This. Inheritance tax is as good a tax as any a) it will not affect me as I won't need any cash when I'm gone and b) as you say, a chosen few get a few quid for doing **** all. I can't think of any other tax which works so well. It's win-win.

Whilst Labour manage the NHS better IMO, they ball's up the economy every time they are in power, which impacts on everyone.

I really think this election will be NHS vs Economy in terms of where the votes go.......

From the "man in the street's" view (i.e the poor), there really seems to be bugger all in this budget. Upping the tax threshold by £200 a year really only equates to having pennies in your pocket back. That said, I'm not entirely sure I know what I was expecting from this. The tax free first £1000 in savings is nice, but only if you've got £1000 to save. Those of us living on minimum wage, or less in my case, really need something. I'd vote for any party who is willing and able to put into practice a "living wage" as opposed to a "minimum" wage.

Every time I come down for a home game we look at house prices in Sussex, and then head sadly back home, flap cap NOT at a jaunty angle.

Anyone who moved up north more than 20 years ago now needs to win the Euromillions to be able to return to Sussex :(

Oh yes, the other thing I would vote for is to make zero hour contracts illegal. Nothing like keeping the proles down with a contract that gives utterly no security or ability to calculate bills properly.

No, it's a terrible thing.

There have been many measures taken to assist with redistribution of wealth since before Dickensian days (when everyone was on the breadline except the filthy rich): forming unions and the right to strike, minimum wage, income taxation, a free NHS and so on. But by far and away the most successful policy has been the formation of inheritance tax.

So IMO, removing this is a massive backward step. Lower income tax and VAT: I can understand these policies, they penalise hard work. But removing inheritance tax? No thanks - it's a tool for ensuring the rich stay rich. And of course it's an absolute disgrace that the Royal family are exempt from it.

Spot on, in my view. Inheritance tax is one of the fairest taxes imaginable, and one which is one of the least distorting of economic incentives.
No surprise that the Tories want it to wither away.

This article, written a number of years ago, well captures some of the relevant arguments in favour of the tax
http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2008/04/inheritance-tax-stuart-white

The philosophical arguments in favour are also pretty weak
