David Burke's Albion signings

Club Scouts go out and look for players. There are two types of scouting missions for new players...One is a generic "lets see what we can find" and the other is a specific "we need a player that can play in X position" or "we want to go and have a look at X player" - this could be as a result of a recommendation.

At the end of the scouting mission, the scout reports back to the Director of Football(DOF) and present their findings and makes a recommendation of any players to sign or whether "Player X" would make a worthwhile signing. Sometimes however, a scouting mission can consist purely of Video footage of that player.

As a result of the assessment, the DOF then makes the decision as to whether "Player X" would fit into the team and is financially viable.

It is the DOF then feels that the player fits the aforementioned criteria, then he informs the Head Coach of the player and they then say "yes" or "no". However, there are some circumstances where the DOF, in the absence of the Head Coach has the authority to agree terms with a player without the agreement of the Head Coach gives their agreement (I can think of three such players from the last 18 months that fit that bill).

The initial Scouting report of could include alot of players which the DOF runs the rule over before they whittle the list down for the Head Coach even further and so, potentially, a list of 50 players which a scout could recommend could end up as just 2 or 3.

This is the reason why it's not only Burke's judgement is being called into question, but also Jones' as it was he who "allegedly" recommended Agustein, Andrews, Obika, Conway & Stephens.

Since Burke has taken over, he has stopped the flow of Development players going to other clubs and started to atract young players into our Development system. The club is set up to build from this system, this is the way to securing the clubs playing stability and future;

Ben Dickenson (dev)
Grant Smith (dev)
Maksimenko (dev)
Adam Chicksen (dev)
Rohan Ince (dev)
Jeffrey Monakana (dev)

I am sure he was also involved in bringing in Danielson from Arsenal and Starky from Chelsea, alongside all the players in our set up like Solly March and JFC to stay in our system and not move on. Sky logged March as being worth millions the other week and this is how Southampton have generated money and built to up to a Premership mid table team.

This success rate will be measured over time and TB is playing the longer game.

The Obika wonder goal on Saturday will occur when the result from that bloody awful overhead kick falls off the roof of the North Stand and bounces into the net

The biggest problem with this is the fact Upson has been called "Matty" and Mattock "Joey". Makes them sound like a couple of special needs kids

With a lot on long term and part time sick/injured

Indeed. I was of the notion that Injuries would be the defining reason as to why we wouldn't achieve a 'top six' finish this season. However the way I have watched us play this season would suggest to me it really wouldn't have mattered what players Oscar had available at his disposal.

Especially when you take into account the players he failed to keep hold of, Burke is doing an awful job. Bridcutt, Barnes, Vicente, Bridge, Hammond, Conway etc.

Our playing squad is getting significantly weaker despite a supposedly bigger budget.... how can anyone truly believe he is doing a good job.

DB is doing a great job and the best thing that has happened to the club since Retard Robbie banged in the equaliser, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he got Oscars job in the summer

I seem to remember some of the taunts being aimed in Conway's direction throughout the first half of his loan period. "Not interested"; "Doesn't even look like a footballer"; "Send the p**** back to Cardiff"; "He's just a poor man's Dobbie and that's saying something" etc. etc..

A few good games and bang - he becomes a necessity.

Fickle.

Absolutely this. I was gutted when he went to Blackburn, provided the moment of the season so far for me with his goal vs Leicester

IMHO the signings will be judged not by who we signed but by who we didnt sign. Our season hit the rails when Crofts was injured as everybody knows but nobody was brought in to directly replace him although perhaps Stephens will but I see him in a fifferent type of role to Crofts. So generally I would say the signings have been disappointing.

Which would be a completely pointless waste of time, if you're going to ditch the manager/head coach, at the first sign of trouble.

Bridcutt: wanted away; refused to play in January
Barnes: wanted away; wanted more money than the club offered him (to the best of my knowledge)
Vicente: you're a hopeless romanticist (although you're not alone on that) -- name me which club has offered him a contract?
Bridge: Reading have paid him a huge wad of cash to undergo treatment; Ward has proved a fine alternative
Hammond: you are joking aren't you?
Conway: Burke played a role in recruiting him in the first place; again, we tried to secure his services, but didn't offer sufficient money (to the best of my knowledge)

Yes the budget is supposedly bigger, but has it been spent? If not, is that at Burke's behest, or Bloom's?

I think, if anything, this proves just how spoiled we were in the Summer of 2012. With such a strong showing in that transfer window have our expectations been raised to levels that were never going to realistically be maintained?

Which sets up a question I'm mulling over (but can't be arsed to start a new thread)

Will any revenue stream decrease of 2014/15.

I understand the club lumped everything it could into the pre FFP '12-'13 accounts, -£14+m.

Therefore '13-'14, even with a slightly increased player budget the loses will be around 'only' £8m.

So that brings us up to next season:-

- Transfer dealings are in the black.
- New kit deal, largest in club history.
- Wages, some high earners have been removed from the bill.
- TV money, if that's not more it's comparable to last season.
- FA Cup money.
- I doubt anyone is eating and drinking less.
- The transport levy went up, bringing the cost down.

I'm struggling to find a reason why Oscar (or the next manager!!) won't have a, dare I say, WAR CHEST to play with this summer.

That window does stick out like a sore thumb.
I don't imagine for one minute the club has ever spent like that before, it certainly hasn't since.

You lay it out beautifully Stat Brother, and I can't disagree with a word of this, but do realise that El Pres is lurking and willing to demonstrate his superior grasp of footballing finances.
