Absolutely!!!!! I strongly believe that people should scrap 'East Sussex', 'West Sussex', etc. on their addresses. Leave these areas for what they were originally intended to be, areas of administration! They should not interfere in our culture, geography or local identity!

I encourage all in Sussex to use 'Sussex' on their addresses!

I agree, suggesting exactly this last year in the context of Royal Mail no longer demanding that you put 'East Sussex' or 'West Sussex' when addressing an envelope. Putting 'Sussex' instead won't speed up delivery but it won't slow it down either. It's a nice touch. Functionally pointless maybe, but nice.

I couldn't really give a damn what the boundaries were 100, 200 or 600 years ago. It's the past. Lets change all boundaries back to what they were 150 years ago and see how that affects the entire map of the world!

If you are having a word, get the map to show the boundaries of the ridings of Yorkshire and, of course, the city of York.

It does already, it's just not very highlighted at the moment. If you centre in on York, you will see the 'city wall' and then the boundaries of the three ridings coming out of this in grey. I do know that there are plans very soon to make these boundaries a bit more prominent on the map.

So this whole 'Brighton v Palace - only club in Sussex v only club in Surrey' isn't true. While Millwall (the district) was in Middlesex, Millwall (the football club) was in Surrey.

While Millwall (the district) is in Middlesex, Millwall (the football club) is in Surrey.

You've also got Crawley Town in Sussex and AFC Wimbledon in Surrey.

As someone mentioned it would be god to see an overlay of the current maps, to see the small changes you are talking about, it reminded me of the big issue cover last week.

But it's good to see London wiped off the map, and the Isle of Wight properly located in Hampshire.

I haven't seen the map, but hopefully if London has been all but eradicated, then Middlesex, (my county of birth), is displayed in all it's glory. Of course it doesn't 'officially' exist at all now, save for being a postal address, and the name of a county cricket club of course.

isn't there an error here, overlooking that the City of London is/was its own autonomous city outside of Middlesex. ???

Yes, Middlesex does still officially exist, as the government statement at the top of this thread states. It was only the county council that was abolished in 1965, not the county itself!

Yes it is its own autonomous city for administrative purposes, but for the purposes of geography it has always been Middlesex.

Today happens to be County Durham Day and in celebration of this, the county flag of Durham is flying outside the Department for Communities & Local Government in Whitehall. This is the first ever County Durham Day which celebrates the Traditional county, not the area of Durham County Council....

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-flag-flying-high-as-the-county-durham-celebrates

"County days, flags and historic counties are an important part of English history with many dating back thousands of years and the government is keen that people are encouraged to mark these strong traditions.

People should take pride in their local identities and continue to champion them irrespective of current tiers of local administration."

This further asserts the Government's position that the Historic/Traditional do still exist!

Perhaps you could explain why 5am is any more strange for me to post random nonsense, Oh and can you point out where my post was negative?

Your first question = you tell me.

Your second question= read your first post again and tell me what's positive about it.

Well done. That has to be the worst comeback ever.

Loving this thread. My aunts live(d) in Staines and I never gave up on "Middlesex" when writing to them...

More importantly I have now realised that I do officially still live in "Sussex" which has always been my preferred label for "Where do you come from?" and even "Where do you live?"...

For me to say I live in "Sussex" has always been instinct and practice. I guess it depends on age, and a bit maybe on sporting interests, but presumably there are plenty of people who do use the "East" and "West"...? We could have a poll of NSCers...?
