Steven Finn comes home - coaching shambles

I hear this morning from Ashley Giles that Finn is now "unselectable" and has been told to go home and stay away from cricket for the time being.

This is on the back of Anderson losing form, Bresnan looking undercooked, Rankin looking out of his depth, Tremlett looking impotent and Swann retiring abruptly. Cook and Root can't buy a run in either form of the game, Matt Prior has been dropped because of a complete loss of form too, and we're seeing a glut of easy chances being put down in the field.

It seems to me that the ECB need to get some new coaches in, and fast.

I read today that Finn has the second best strike rate of any England bowler since the late 40's - Simon Jones being number one. Not sure what the coaches have done to him... seems like they just want four fast bowlers who bowl the same way

I just don't get it. Are the coaches really that incompetent that they could have messed with his confidence/technique to that extent?
I've been saying it for a while - clear out the coaches, slim down the size of the whole operation.

Perfect bowler for Aussie conditions, still can't believe Tremlett was preferred to a genuine 90mph bowler, maybe slightly inconsistent at times but as long as he takes wickets, which his stats prove he does, it doesn't matter. Just destroyed the guys confidence.

It's got to the point now where you wouldn't bet against them losing every game of international cricket on this tour.

I fear that there was some kind of sub-rule introduced to make constantly hitting the stumps at the umpires end punishable. I'm not sure but I think after say, three such occasions the bowler is not allowed to bowl again in that innings. Ergo, you might be getting 4 overs out of Finn then you are carrying a bowler. Now that would not be fun in 42 C in Oz.

What nationality is our seam bowling coach again?

Does it matter then that our Head coach is Zimbabwean and several of our players could be Saffers ? I think the last true " English " player we had was Phil Tufnell.....nuff said ?

I feel sorry for Finn - he was originally hailed as 'our Glenn McGrath' because he had pace, bounce and nagging accuracy with a real knack for taking wickets. If anything too much of a wicket to wicket bowler which meant his delivery strides were a gnats too close to the stumps. However you would think it would be a reasonable challenge for a decent international bowling coach to gently adjust his action rather than disrupt it.

It occurs to me that Mark Robinson had a similar bowling action with that nagging line and length (albeit not as deadly) and might have been the sort of coach to help Finn.

I fear that Finn's action has been tinkered with so much that his head is now a mess too.

England coaches always have been a disaster. They never could deal with the talented, hence they looked for players like Mark Ealam, Craig White, and well who was that "leg spinner" in the Sydney Test. His leg spin wasn't even club cricket standard. So we shouldn't be surprised. But still, listen toMatt Prior and the reason the batsmen kept smacking the ball down deep square legs throat was because they had their tie on wrongly and turned up a minute late for a team meeting with a Zimbabwean coach with a clip board. Does make you wonder doesn't it.

Nail on head. The whole set up has become bloated.

The problem is that specialist coaches have to do "something" to earn their corn - and be seen to do it. With a reasonably settled group of players this means either constant tinkering with technique and actions or essentially doing nothing and hoping no one notices. The issue with approach one is you coach the life out of a player (i.e. Finn) or you let them cruise, confident in their world-beater-ness (i.e. Anderson and Swann). Any who are naturally prodigious (i.e Pietersen) simply cause conflict in this sort of setup. The inevitable result of specialist coaches and a settled side is a long period of success followed by inexplicable failure and the ruination of some good players.

Incidentally you can see this in the BHA squad where Buckley seems to have the game coached out of him whereas Lua Lua is still the same instinctive uncoachable genius he always was. Buckley is regarded as the better pro but guess who's having the better season?
