Great game, really enjoyed that, especially the result but this feeling was soured by the fact that when I got back to my car there was a parking ticket on the windscreen.

I park in Lewes in the residential area behind the railway station carpark. I am very careful to make sure I am parking in a proper spot, not overhanging the end if parking area markings on the road. I also paid for a ticket from the nearby machine (the ticket allowed me to park up until Monday morning) and clearly placed this on my dashboard.

The car is very tidy and there is nothing else on the dash to obscure the ticket. They are obviously employing blind yellow banded traffic vultures (sorry, wardens) these days as it must be nearly impossible to see a white ticket on a black dash in broad daylight( just before 3 pm).

When I calm down and shall read how to go about contesting this, I took a couple of photos of my paid for ticket on the dash and the parking fine ticket under the wiper to hopefully prove that I had paid for my stay.

To be honest, I didn't know there were any 'permit only' spaces, if I was in one then I will put my hand up, guilty as charged, and pay The fine. I was parked in the street (where I always park for football) and not In any of the off road bays.

Been having a look at Google maps at the parking signs, although it's difficult to make out the signs it does look like I was in a private permit holders area. Further down the (same) road is parking meter and further up the (same) road is meter so it looks like I just wasn't paying enough attention. Guilt as charged I guess, I'll pay the fine early to get a 50% reduction.

Think I'll go back to getting the train from Appledore and just get home 45 minutes later.

Great climb down quotes every time there mate wasn't it - think you look a bit silly now eh?

Leave off. The guy made a mistake, what's the problem? We've all done it. I would appeal, he bought a ticket but parked in the wrong bay. Lesson learnt, apology offered and won't happen again.

Lewes traffic wardens are scum. Gave us a ticket because we hadn't put a ticket on our car when parking to see a friend who is disabled with a one year old. Luckily I was paying as the ticket was being written and while the warden didn't back down I appealed it successfully. If the OP thinks he was legit he should appeal. If not, watch out, they'll get you if they even think they can.

Still might be worth checking the layout. My wife got a parking fine in Freshfield Road for being in a permit holders only layby. However, we successfully appealed on the basis of inadequate signs. Basically, she turned left from Eastern road and the first lay by for about 4 cars on the left were permit holders and pay and display. As there were no spaces, she continued up the road to the next layby, parked in the first spot, bought a ticket and planted it on the dashboard and then walked back down to Eastern Rd. This lay by was in fact permit holders only however the only sign to that effect was at the top end of the lay by. We argued that if the restrictions changed then there should be a sign at the first point that you pass the lay by and they agreed. So the moral is, check there is adequate signs marking the restrictions. Common sense says there should be signs at each end so which ever you way you walk back, you'll see them! Might be worth checking the signs in Lewes!

Obvious question is what was the name of the road?

And he has owned up to his mistake :wozza: he doesn't look silly as he won't do it again.

It's an easy to make this mistake as I have explained.

There's no problem - it just makes me smile wryly when you see a first post like that when somebody rants (by his own admission) so much and you think the other party must be in the wrong, and then gradually there's a big climb down as the facts start to appear.

Yeah I agree - the guy did make a mistake. I'm not going to chastise the guy on here, but there's no point encouraging him to appeal, it's a waste of time (as he's now realised himself!!).

I would appeal, what has he got to lose.
He should deduct the money he put in the meter for the ticket if he pays the fine.

Obvious question is what was the name of the road?

It was Court road, towards the railway line. It was on the 'main' road rather than one of the side roads off the main one. I've parked on that road loads of times (buying a ticket each time) and have looked at the parking restrictions on many occasions (i.e. a ticket is needed Mon-Sat up till 5pm (I'm sure that used to be 6pm). I just assumed that the whole road was covered by parking meters as there was a meter both up and down the road. I didn't actually check the sign this time (as I said, I just assumed the whole road was the same).

Looking at google maps, there is a sign next to where I parked, I just didn't look at it this time, is was the only space in the road and I was quite chuffed to have found it. If there had been no spaces I would have stuck it in the main carpark at the other end of the road.

I won't bother appealing, rules are rules, this time I didn't abide by them through my own stupid fault/assumptions, every other time I have.

Always worth an appeal. It is hard to find a parking restriction that actually stands up in court, lazy councils issue restrictions but fail to ensure the markings or tickets comply with the law.Bays marked out wrong, inappropriate signage, yellow lines not maintained and even my personal favorite.

Adur council throughout their district for years issued tickets stating clearly that one should use the sticker on the back of the ticket to attach it to the windscreen.
cheapskates then loaded the machines with plain tickets that meant (unless you had a handy roll of sellotape in your car) that EVERY car parked in breach of the regulations, leaving a ticket on your dashboard was just as much in breach of the conditions of parking as not even buying a ticket at all.

Lazy councils make their own parking restrictions invalid by failing to comply with the law,do a bit of research and only pay if they have got it right.

Time and effort on both his and the Parking department's side?

Fair enough mate, a very well reasoned post there I must say (compared to your first anyway, ha ha!!). Maybe other posters on here will stop pointlessly encouraging you to appeal now?

You certainly weren't stupid but yes, you were wrong to assume.

I got my first ticket a few months ago and was fuming too but ultimately it was correct!!

Dig a bit, make sure they complied with their own regulations, check out the bays, fine discount periods apply during an appeal so you have time to find a flaw in their regulations.
You paid in good faith, dont become a needless victim of LDC greed.

Appeal.

I once got a ticket in similar circumstances here in Hastings. I'd paid to park too, but it turned out the place I'd parked was poorly marked permit holders. In short, I photocopied my ticket from the machine and sent it in (informing them I still had the original) explaining my mistake, how unclear the signposting was and my clear intention to pay to park. Got a patronising reply waging a finger at me and telling me not to do it again, but that they'd let me off on this occasion :)

Well worth a try as it's a genuine mistake on your part. Good luck.

Thanks, in my defence, this is my first ever ticket of any kind in 25 odd years of driving so I was a little p***ed off when I wrote my first post. It's only as this thread has evolved that I have realised the real situation.

check out the bays

It's over a 90 minute drive for me to get back to check the bays and as I work during the week it's a little difficult to get back. The next home game now is not until February which is a little late. I'll take this one on the chin as I now accept I was in the wrong, I don't believe in appealing through technicalities. I'll go back to travelling by train with the satisfaction that LDC will get no more of my money.

I'd still chance my arm on appeal personally. Won't take anytime at all to pen a quick letter admitting your mistake and that you thought you was parking correctly. State your honesty in paying by pointing to your ticket from the machine. No need to fight them on technicalities if you don't want to, just appeal to their better nature instead. You might get a nice surprise. If you get no joy then at least you've tried. Fair enough if you just want to pay and be done with it.

Dig a bit, why? From what he's said they have complied with their own regulations.

You can't get off a parking ticket on the fact that you 'paid in good faith' for a ticket from the machine.

And as for the 'needless victim' thing. Jesus Christ - the guy's got a parking ticket, not being taunted by hoodies.
