Went to the first Walton game..0-0...they had a goal disallowed in the first ten seconds. Couldn't make the replay, as it was an afternoon k/o midweek. On the way back from work bought an early edition Argus. John Vinnicombe's match report went up to about 70 mins and I read that the Albion were one down. I then turned to the ' stop press ' section, only to read that someone had scored a hattrick in the last ten mins and we had lost 4-0...completely gobsmacked.
From memory, Bristol R were flying and top of the table when they came to us a few days later. I remember getting excited when we got it back to 1-2 but that was quickly extinguished and Warboys and Bannister ran riot.
If I remember rightly, we then lost by 4 goals away at Tranmere...so we conceded 16 goals in just over a week.
Happy Days!

That was actually just four days before, on the Tuesday night. So we lost consecutive home games - 4-0 to Walton and Hersham United and then 8-2 to Bristol Rovers. Cloughie can't have been a happy bunny.

"Following the defeat Clough almost got into a fight with comedian Eric Sykes, who was associated with Brighton & Hove Albion at the time and was laughing about the result to a friend during a phone call"

Sorry to be pedantic but it was a Wednesday.

I believe Eric Sykes was actually associated with Walton & Hersham, not The Albion. He was sitting in their director's box for the game at Walton and cheered them the whole 90 minutes. If he was associated with us, he hid it well that day.

Thank goodness we've progressed since those days and don't exit cups to 'minnows'...:(

Was Norman Wisdom still a director then?
