I don't like Ronaldo, but agree I would rather have him on my team than Bale.
And good though Bale is, he would not be fit to clean the boots of Zinedine Zidane - one of his forerunners as most expensive player ever. Just goes to show it is more about commercial value than football.

Whilst that might be a wonderful gesture the reality is that it would mean that the £83m, direct or indirect income from fans, would go out of the game. I'm sure that if you totalled up the charitable givings of all football fans then the £83m would be a paltry sum in comparison. It would not be right as far as I am concerned to spend that money on a cause, no matter how deserving, when it originates from payments made for a totally different purpose. You might just as well criticise TB for spending £100+ million on supporting BHAFC rather than giving it to charity.

It's nobodies concern other than Real Madrid and Gareth Bale what those figures are.
It always makes me laugh when people moan about how much people earn especially in this country. Surely we want people to earn as much as humanly possible? The more people earn the more tax they are paying!?!

Well that is another debate but until those loopholes are closed you can't blame companies/individuals exploiting them.

This. Therefore, "worth it". Some people are still VERY confused about how capitalism works. We've had it for quite a while now?...
And pro football playing is probably the most competitive job market in the world. Those at the top deserve their pay cheques because they have beaten off competition from BILLIONS of others who all aspired to get there themselves.
By comparison, there are "captains of industry" who have been awarded millions because they have beaten only a handful of others (relatively speaking) to those top jobs, because it is still the case that ambition, intelligence and qualifications are only as important as knowing the right people and a measure of good luck.
Of course, capitalism isn't actually fair, and doesn't pretend to be. That's why it is important to have fair taxation to ensure those less fortunate are looked after.

You, me and everybody else knows that that is simply not true. The more people earn, the better accountants they can afford to help them avoid taxes. The only people who pay more taxes when they earn more are 'normal' people whose increased taxes effectively contribute the square root of eff all in the grand scheme of things.
I agree entirely. The companies don't make the loopholes.

Totally agree. Personally, I think Ozil is a better player and Arsenal really did well to get him.
If I had the money, I'd pay many times more than that for Mrs Ziggy.

I am old enough to remember a similar furore when Jimmy Greaves was transferred for £100,000, and again when Trevor Francis became our first £1million footballer..That's inflation, I guess...As has been said it is an unregulated market of supply and demand. Real Madrid should recoup their investment handsomely and Spurs have spent most of it already , so the money circulates around the game.
Pity that it all goes to pay players inflated wages, though..........but that too is just unregulated economics. If a tuneless 21 year old girl can make millions by digitally enhanced recordings and wiggling her a$$.....why not Bale make money by being a brilliant footballer?
