I find it appalling that an ex teacher spells it appauling, really, genuinely.

His is a very good post, and this isn't the thread for cheap spelling shots.

Anyway, maybe he was a brilliant maths teacher.

It wasn't a cheap spelling shot , I meant what I said , perhaps you ought to practice what you preach with regard to cheap shots and your comments to Spielberg.

I'm not getting drawn into any nonsense on this thread. It devalues an important discussion on a serious issue.

FWIW it's been quite refreshing to actually find common ground with a few posters such as The Spanish and yourself, with whom I rarely agree. And I've openly commended US too, on this very thread for his change of position - evidence that constructive debate and challenging of views you find abhorrent CAN actually work.

To be fair hans and others made me reconsider my viewpoint and the fact this guy should have no sympathy. I made a few posts without thinking it through clearly so am happy to admit I got it wrong this time.

This is a common but sad part of this discussion.

People dismissing the girl almost as being a stupid an unaware person who couldn't possibly be self aware in regards to how she thinks and feels.

Go out into society and you'll find a hell of a lot of intelligent and incredibly self aware young people out there. In that same society you'll find a hell of a lot of completely clueless and moronic "adults" who are without a doubt far less capable of expressing and articulating their thoughts/feelings than these so called "children".

While the teachers actions are the focal point of the issue, to dismiss the young woman's thoughts and feelings as irrelevant is incredibly condescending.

Her feelings are not really relevant in the context of the trial. Her feelings are relevant to those who love and care for her. The teacher shouldn't be penalized less because she 'loved' him. His actions alone are the only factors to consider.

Certainly makes the 15 mths Stuart Hall got, look like a bit of a piss take. A sentence should reflect the crime not someone's age or state of health. Forrest got 5 and a half years, fair enough. But Hall should have got more and if that meant he died in prison, then that's just the way it is. He didn't give the kids he abused any thought, why should he get any.

Stuart Hall was prosecuted and sentenced under the pre-1985 law... it was indecent assault (which doesn't exist any more) and carried a lower maximum sentence.

Hmm, assuming this is all true (It is the Daily Mail after all) then it does change a lot of things. I had previously assumed this was a one off situation and he had fallen in love (still wrong of course). If it turns out he has previous for this sort of thing then the punishment is fully justified.

Agreed.

Assuming that is true then he ticks the predatory box, the one off argument goes out the window and deserves everything he gets.

After reading some of the stuff that came out today, I'm sad to admit it seems like I'm wrong about all this.

Still maintain the guy isn't a paedophile though and his crimes aren't as serious as Stuart Hall's.

But if what I've read today is true, the guy is indeed a scumbag.

I haven't read the full details or all of this thread. The only thing I don't get is why he was charged with abduction? No issues with the other convictions. I'd have liked to have seen a longer sentence.
