That Kelvin Morton game back in 1989

Just been watching it online (never actually watched it before as I was a bit young to be there at the time). Is it me or does that whole game look a bit...suspicious??

Not the penalty decisions, as all of Palace's (disappointingly) appear to be legitimate calls, more the fact that our players keep making utterly ridiculous and completely unnecessary challenges in the box. Then there's a pointless handball with no Palace player near by Keith Dublin or Ian Chapman. The only really dodgy looking penalty decision is the one Alan Curbishley scored for us- can't see in a million years why that was awarded, can only assume Mr Morton was in on it  You've got Wendy Wilkins flying in with a late tackle and getting booked, Mike Trusson getting sent off for another stupid foul...were our players all pissed that day??

Seriously, if I was watching that game between two Italian teams, I'd swear blind there was something bent about it. Instead, I shall just put it down to the Albion's own lovable incompetence. Sorry if it's sacrilege to say it :lolol:

Penalty!

My first trip to our mates up the road. Some hefty challenges from our boys, Morton was mental. Lovely sunny day though.

I was about 17 years old and went to the game. Ian wright scored an absoulutely blinding goal with a dipping volley. What I remember most about the game was the fact that at half time some bloke came on with a big bucket of paint and 'touched up' both penalty spots!
I think pembertons spot kick is still in orbit somewhere!

The other mildly amusing thing is the apparent lack of atmosphere. There are a few songs, granted, but it doesn't exactly feel like a cauldron. Funny how our memories of bygone eras differ from the reality.

Still think that game looks utterly bent though. Palace were clearly in on it, judging by three of their penalties.

It was pretty flat, perhaps the hot weather and going behind quite early had something to do with it.

Although we lost 2-1, it almost felt like a victory due to farcical penalty taking from Palace & the fact we played most of the game with 10 men. It was very much a hollow victory for Palace & most of their fans knew it.

At the time, five penalties in a game was a record I believe? Even more bizarrely, four were missed & none of them were overly controversial as decisions.

It literally took me YEARS to realise / admit it, but Morton did very little wrong. In fact his worst decision was OUR penalty.

Absolutely. Even the Albion players didn't appeal :lolol:

The most curious thing..
And Smith Must Score April 1989 Issue 5 devotes almost 1 1/2 pages to the report of this game in which the main feeling appears to be one of complete bemusement as to what was going on, and the fact that we were well beaten - the Palace penalty tally was greater than the Brighton shots on goal.

"This was Kelvin Morton's day"

What was funny, at the time, was as the penalty count started to rise, any contact in either box had both sets of fans mockingly sceaming for a penalty. Possibly the only time us and them were 'on the same side' in a derby

Does anyone know if there is any footage of the Saint & Greavsie coverage of the game on the net somewhere?

I was there and just remember laughter ringing round the ground. Nobody could quite believe what was going on. It was all very surreal and quite possibly, very crooked.

Yeah, so was I, it was my first trip to the place. In 3 visits, I've seen us concede 8 penalties, and collect 3 red cards. Saturday actually brought my average down a bit with just 2 pens.

Unlikely as I recall it was an Easter Bank holiday game. Saint & Greavise as a rule seldom went back that far for catching up with the previous weeks football
