Looks like our favourite egotistical (but brilliant) cricketer might be throwing his toys out of the pram for good.

The man on his day is a batting genius! The most exciting batsman in the world barr none, also the most selfish and unreliable. I f***ing hate him.

He's a S. African Boycott. Only ever played for himself. Great when he wanted to be but threw his wicket away normally when needed most.

Pretty much agree with Red Star.
The guy oozes class on his day, but the guy only plays for himself and not for he team or for his country - granted he's not English!
Everything seems to be about Kevin Pietersen these days - what he wants and when he wants to play!
The only thing in his favour, there's no one lining up to take his place in either format...

I won't be sad to see him go. I always saw him as mercenary and was furious when he was given the captaincy over Strauss. I never saw the likes of Robin Smith and Jonathan Trott the same way, so it's not an anti Saffar bias.

Should be a Premiershite Footballer, as he has exactly the same motivation as them i.e. how can he make as much dosh for as little effort as possible (Answer - play for the Chennai Chappatis or whoever in the IPL)

It'll be a big blow to the selection committee - their 'Anyone but English' policy will be harder to sustain. Still, I'm sure they'll find another South African with an English Great Uncle's mistress if they try hard enough

:lolol:

On his day the best most dominating batsmen in the world but in the last few years he's not been consistent enough AND he has the mentality that certain people have when success goes to their head, the old 'I'm better than everyone else so I'll do what I want'. I hope he doesn't retire though, because he is our best batsmen really and will be tough to replace

I have huge sympathy for him. The way our cricketers are thrashed around the world playing game after game is ridiculous. Now we're at the stage that different tournaments are staged at the same time (IPL v County championship) with demands on loyalties, we have home test series in May, we have completely pointless one-day series against Australia every summer, and we're seeing talented cricketer after talented cricketer being forced to pick and choose and take decisions that put them at odds with their board. The likes of Brett Lee, Lasith Malinga and Andrew Flintoff have been lost to test cricket because their bodies just couldn't keep up with the demands, and the ECB continues to be unreasonable to the likes of KP who wanted to stop playing meaningless one-dayers but was forced to give up 20-20 at the same time - meaning the fans suffer the most. Its a mess and KP is one of the few people with the balls to stand up to it.

Even then a mild-mannered press conference like yesterdays is deemed to be a 'shocking outburst' and behind the scenes talks with the ECB are leaked and called 'grabbing the headlines'. Seems to be an approach to demonise Pietersen, and judging by comments on here, its working.

All this makes perfect sense if KP's argument was that he wanted to rest with his family. It isn't though. He wants to miss the tour of NZ so he can play the entire IPL and then he still wants to be in for the Ashes. If there is too much cricket, why does he want to play the entire IPL? Doesn't make sense. He wants his cake, and he wants to eat double helpings.

Would be a pity if KP gives up Test cricket and hope a compromise can be acheived but equally I don't think the ECB will back down readily and why should they? Yes an on form KP puts bums on seats but don't think the England hierarchy will be blackmailed.

Maybe we should indulge KP's whims but even then there are no guarantees he would honour this, given that he has plenty of 'previous', a track record of self centred petulance well documented from his Nottinghamshire days, and happy to do his dirty washing via social media and in the press. KP should never have been given the England captaincy. Look how he threw his toys out of the pram and knifed Peter Moores in the back. Sadly Englands subsequent Test record will massage over a rather shoddy episode, making KP look right.

I fear the lure of some big paydays in the IPL and Big Bash have turned his head.

But then it is a short earning span for a cricketer and 4 or 5 seasons in the IPL can set them up financially for life.

Like all great characters he hs a fragile ego. Obviously loves playing for England and anyone that says otherwise is a twat. Obviously isnt getting the TLC he needs from the committee and his comments about the dressing room are telling. I think theres more to this than meets the eye. Still I am there on the 4th day at Lords so might even see him in his last performance.

Our ODI team has been fantastic without him, as will our test team.

Great player when he fancies it but totally replaceable.

The cricketers like KP that get the big bucks from the IPL already make huge money from their central contracts and commercial interests. To say KP isn't already set up for life is being naive, he's been earning top money for 7 or 8 years now and is a multi-millionaire, and if he was happy to carry on playing for England, he'd have another 4 or so years at the top level.

The international schedule needs to be reduced, but only to reduce the stress on players, not give them the opportunity to play lots more cricket in other countries.

I'd agree with this. Stuff was leaked when he was captain and then he got the blame for going public. The same thing's happening now. Lots of the press are constantly criticising him for distracting the team when it's they(and the players and committee members who are leaking the information to them) that are causing this.

As for him wanting to be treated differently to everyone else, he doesn't. He just wants to play 20/20 not 50 over cricket. We have seperate captains and seperate squads, why can't he just play in the 20/20? Micheal Lumb hasn't played any cricket for England since last summer. Alex Hales only plays 20/20 for England.
He is arrogant( unlike Swann, Flintoff, Botham, Hussain?) but lots of the grief he gets doesn't stack up.

Whether he's right or wrong, my issue with him is the timing of his decision.

If he's going to throw his toys out the pram then do it at the end of the series, not when we are facing our most important Test match for years in a matter of days. Now all the focus will be on him 'just in case' it's his last test match.
