At least the club isn't joining in with this 'love in' with the away fans....oh, hold on a sec...

The Royals were proud to receive a note of thanks on Wednesday afternoon from Brighton and Hove Albion, who took time out to contact the club and praise the behaviour of Reading's fans at the Amex Stadium.

A sell-out allocation of 2,733 supporters travelled down from Berkshire to witness Brian McDermott's men snatch a memorable 1-0 win over the Seagulls - and as has been the case in recent weeks, they were a credit to their team.

Chris Baker, Head Safety Officer and Security Manager for Brighton and Hove Albion, sent the following:

"Just a quick note to let you know what a credit to the club the Reading fans were last night. We had no issues at all and they helped to provide a fantastic atmosphere in the stadium. The rapport between the stewards and fans was excellent and everyone that I spoke to was full of praise for the way the supporters conducted themselves. Please could you ensure that this is conveyed to your media guys as we would like to thank the supporters and wish you all the best for the rest of the season."

The club wants to be seen as a welcoming place to come. More away fans = more money and more atmosphere. Doesn't mean the fans have to clap them though, that's just stupid.

I don't do it most games, but being quite close the away fans it was a lot of fun at the Portsmouth and Saints game to patronisingly clap them

That seems a bit harsh, I thought they made a fair amount of noise. :jester:
You may think that, but I took a sound meter, and identified the WSU as the quietest fans, so, along with my colleague, I booed them.

I find it more embarrassing the number of people who clap the announcement when we're level/winning, but boo when we're losing. That's bad form, imo. If the fans are disrespectful then I don't applaud them, but I didn't have a problem with reading so I gave a cursory applause.

If you don't like the clapping, don't do it. I am sure every one here behaves in a way some fans don't like. Some people feel it's their right to stand and think proper fans shouldn't sit. Some prefer to sit, and don't see why people feel they have to stand despite the club initially saying only the back our rows of the north stand would tolerate standing. Some fans like to sing out all game, and others prefer to watch the game. Some feel they have to wave their scarves in front of other fans faces, some think they should be singing about themselves, and so on.

Unfortunately, we're too many, too varied to have one set of acceptable behaviour. So, I shall continue my harmless applauding of any well behaved opposing fans, you continue whatever harmless behaviours you have and we'll just get on with ourselves.

I really can't why anyone gets upset by it.
Those who show appreciation for fans of another team travelling to support their team clap them to show it.
Those who don't or just don't clap and stay silent.
But why do people get upset by it, Just don't get it

Well said. At the end of the day does it really matter as it has no effect on the outcome of the game? If you want to clap do so, if you don't stay silent.

Because I can't think of one occassion where the away side has applauded back. Instead they sarcastically cheer and take the piss! Even away fans that have the good nature to come on here after the game and feedback say they find it a little too friendly!! Such a pointless exercise, and very tinpot indeed.

How do you know that their cheers are sarcastic.

They have come a long way to support their team - I like applauding them for that - just as much as I kie taking three points of their team or knocking them out of the cup.

Why can't football fans be polite to each other ? makes a pleasant change from avoiding thugs with knives or a hail of coins coming at us!

incredible, so you take notice of what people shout at you at a football match

Yes. Don't mind a bit a of banter but utter hatred including homophobic and racist abuse should just not be tolerated and I personally won't return to a club where the atmosphere is aggressive - with a small child why would I?

Unless you are an ignoramus who thinks it is alright.

This digresses though. We should be seen as a good club to come to with great fans and a welcoming atmosphere. If you want the Amex to be a place that is the complete opposite, somewhere you wouldn't even think of taking your child to a game and relish the idea of abusing other fans and getting involved in a scrap, then go support elsewhere. Again exaggeration and I'm sure that isn't the case but what harm can applause do? Don't like it? Don't do it, I don't care but why criticise those trying to create a positive atmosphere - it can only further the club's profile and the idea of a COMMUNITY stadium.

I'm all in favour of applauding away support when their numbers and the noise they make merits it.

It makes a fantastic favourable impact on the fans and the management of other clubs (been mentioned to me by directors of two clubs who have been at the Amex this year) and being recognised as a welcoming venue doesn't mean we need be any less intimidating if our fans can be equally as loud in supporting our team- in some ways it's rather the opposite

I like that we are different than other clubs, its things like that that will make the away fans come back and put money into our club.

we're the west stand, and we'll clap who we want (to the tune of that rubbish 'we're the north stand and we'll stand when we want' song)

in all seriousness... i almost always clap. it's a nice touch. why be unfriendly when you can be friendly? we should take pride from the clapping, most away fans think it's amazing.

Because, as I have previously pointed out, they come accompanied with wanker signs/v gestures.

I'll do what I want mate. I can clap if I want to. Nothing wrong with a bit of decency in life is there.

Point made so unaggressively! Like one giant oxymoron.
