I take that back - the radar wasn't updating - it's developed into quite a large area of light precipitation.. interesting, and not forecast. This shows the difficulty of forecasting snow in these setups.

also, I wouldn't rule out some snow in the Croydon area in a hour of so's time, as that shower over Essex doesn't seem to be disappating either.

Tiny tiny bit of snow in haywards heath, just a few very small flakes settled on some cars. Doesn't really look like snow, looks like frost but it was deffo falling from the sky when I went out 10 minutes ago

Models seem to now be in agreement on the deep cold being cut off over the upcoming weekend, with high pressure establishing over southern Britain.

Being 'cut off'? Does that mean we'll be returning to dull, damp, milder, miserable weather at the weekend? Bah!

Also, people annoy me when they say "It's too cold for snow", as the girl who sits opposite me said this morning. Surely it snows very heavily in Arctic and Alpine areas with temperatures well below freezing? Isn't it more a case that when we have very cold weather, there's usually little, if any, cloud cover, hence no snow. But when it does snow, we have cloud cover which increases the temperature?

Yes. What you say is correct - As temp drop there is a decreasing capability for air to hold the necessary moisture to generate precipitation. So at about -40C there is little chance of any snow; however above that it's always possible. As you say, generally in the UK snow falls in the range -1C -> +1C, and mostly in the 0C to +1C range, so it will often warm up when it snows.

Also, my statement about the cold stopping this weekend is perhaps a little premature. The ECM 32 day outlook still has Feb as mainly blocked (to the NW this time) with a cold outlook; so who knows?!
