Are West Ham still called the Irons? Not heard that for a while.

Also, I think Coventry were 'the Singers' before Jimmy Hill brought back the Sky Blue kit.

I know a West Ham fan who I'm pretty sure I've heard call his club the Irons. He might be the only one though!

West Ham fans still sing "Irons" at games now.

Which, even with my limited knowledge of cockney rhyming slang, is pretty ironic, especially in games against us.

The Throstles- West Brom

really?? But amusingly, WBA should really be nicknamed "The Turds"
The Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) is a thrush that breeds across much of Eurasia. It is also known in English dialects as throstle or mavis. It has brown upperparts and black-spotted cream or buff underparts and has three recognised subspecies. Its distinctive song, which has repeated musical phrases, has frequently been referred to in poetry.

formed out of Thames Ironworks FC

the hammers on the badge represent the hammers used in the foundries. Nothing to do with the district of West ham

In June 1900, club chairman Arnold Hill's Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company acquired another engineering firm in a financial takeover and became a limited company for the first time. 4,000 ten shilling shares (50p) were sold to Iron Works staff and the general public, with Arnold Hills generous enough to match sales of any shares one-to-one. At the end of June, Thames Ironworks F.C. resigned from the Southern League and were officially wound up.

On 5 July 1900 they reformed under the new name of West Ham United and accepted an offer of the Southern League place left vacant by Thames Ironworks. Len Bowen, a Welsh clerk at the Iron Works Company was appointed as the first West Ham United club secretary

Coventry City was formed by workers at the (then quite large) Singers factory in Coventry. Singers made cars I think

Today, I've just bought the wonderful 'Got, Not Got - The A-Z of Lost Football Culture, Treasures and Pleasures' which happens to cover this subject.

It mentions Leicester were known as the Filberts until the mid-70s, some club (presumably Nottingham Forest) used to known as the Foresters, and a recent attempt to rebrand Manchester City as, ahem, the Laser Blues. Ahem.

Also, one club used to be known as the Heathens. Any idea who?

A brilliant educated guess! With that train of thought, it may also be Birmingham from their days as Small Heath.
